Top 100 Google’s Best April Fool Events
Google is well known for its April Fool’s Day “product launches”. But many of them are amazingly complicated, with multiple pages, FAQs and complex screen grabs. These aren’t just hastily prepared jokes that were thought of the day before like the weak attempts by numerous other firms.
So we’ve listed our 10 favourite April Fool’s day Google faux-launches. Gmail isn’t here – despite it seeming like a hoax at the time and being launched on 1 April, that’s proved to be no joke. Though we bet someone at Google was enjoying one at the time.
1. Google MentalPlex
After two years of existence, Google decided it was time to have a play with what we’d believe it could do. MentalPlex involved a standard Google search page, complete with a spinning, eye-popping circle that you were meant to peer into to read your mind and determine what you are searching for. A vision of the future? Google even published a full fake FAQ on MentalPlex, too. To be fair though, all the search results were April Fool-related.
2. Google GBall
From Google Australia this year, the Gball page is probably even more amusing than CADIE (see below). “This weekend around the country, the gBall(BETA) will change Australian rules football as we know it.” The ball can be found by Google technology when it’s lost as well as perform other handy Aussie Rules functions: “gBall vibrates if player agents or talent scouts want to speak to you…find your lost gBall online using Google Maps.”
3. The PageRank reveal
A particular favourite of the TechRadar team. After continuing speculation about its PageRank technology, Google decided it would tell us all what was going on. PigeonRank was the result.
“By collecting flocks of pigeons in dense clusters, Google is able to process search queries at speeds superior to traditional search engines, which typically rely on birds of prey, brooding hens or slow-moving waterfowl to do their relevance rankings.”
“When a search query is submitted to Google, it is routed to a data coop where monitors flash result pages at blazing speeds. When a relevant result is observed by one of the pigeons in the cluster, it strikes a rubber-coated steel bar with its beak, which assigns the page a PigeonRank value of one. For each peck, the PigeonRank increases. Those pages receiving the most pecks, are returned at the top of the user’s results page with the other results displayed in pecking order.” Top marks for ingenuity, at least.
4. Google Gulp
The idea behind this fake 2005 beverage was a rip-off of the concept behind the original Gmail – that you had to be ‘invited’ to get it by somebody who’d already bought it. “You can pick up your own supply of this ‘limited release’ product simply by turning in a used Gulp Cap at your local grocery store.
“How to get a Gulp Cap? Well, if you know someone who’s already been “gulped,” they can give you one. And if you don’t know anyone who can give you one, don’t worry – that just means you aren’t cool. But very, very (very!) soon, you will be.” Naturally it was a beta…
5. Google TiSP
Possibly the most ridiculous Google fool, though PigeonRank was pretty close. Google’s Toilet Internet Service Provider was intended to take advantage of sewage piping to bring 8Mbps broadband to your toilet “vacuum-sealed to prevent water damage”. The user would simply drop a cable down the toilet, then flush it. “Mac and Linux support coming soon.” The how it works page about ‘Going with the flow’ is also worth a read.
6. Gmail Paper
Google changed the log-in page for Gmail for this one. “Everyone loves Gmail,” read the blurb on the page. “But not everyone loves email, or the digital era. What ever happened to stamps, filing cabinets, and the mailman? Well, you asked for it, and it’s here. We’re bringing it back.”
Another theme with Gmail’s fools is that they tend to include amusing fake testimonials on the page. “It’s paper, plain and easy. I sometimes find myself wondering: what will Google think of next? Cardboard?”
7. Gmail Custom Time
Another one involving Gmail was more subtle. A new red link in the top right of users’ inboxes announced a new feature – Gmail Custom Time. It supposedly enabled users to pre-date messages but “you’ll only be able to send email back until 1 April, 2004, the day we launched Gmail. If we were to let you send an email from Gmail before Gmail existed, well, that would be like hanging out with your parents before you were born - crazy talk. It also claimed “Gmail utilizes an e-flux capacitor” – we think Doc Brown would have something to say about that.
8. Blogger “Google Weblogs (beta)
This ‘enhancement’ for Blogger was billed as “the next revolution in personal publishing”. The premise was that Google would use its algorithms to put your best content at the top of your blog page. “Even if your later work goes downhill your previous posts will still shine. Unsure of what to post about? Just click “I’m Feeling Lucky” and we’ll “take care” of the rest!”
Some of the features actually sounded appealing. “No more template languages to mess with or sidebars to get right. Our advanced Google algorithms automatically populate your blog’s sidebar with the most relevant possible content.”
9. Google Romance
From the year after comes this gem. Increasingly Google’s fools have become more complex, with extra pages and references elsewhere to support the theme. Romance said that “dating is a search problem. Solve it with Google”.
Google also isn’t afraid to poke fun at itself and how it does things. “Using our Soulmate Search, [you’ll] get back search results that could, in theory, include the love of your life. Then we’ll send you both on a Contextual Date, which we’ll pay for while delivering to you relevant ads that we and our advertising partners think will help produce the dating results you’re looking for.”
10. CADIE. Or is it MySpace?
Last night, Google launched Cadie, the world’s first “artificial intelligence” tasked-array system. “Tonight we’re pleased to announce that just moments ago, the world’s first Cognitive Autoheuristic Distributed-Intelligence Entity (CADIE) was switched on and began performing some initial functions.”
“Earlier today, for instance, CADIE deduced from a quick scan of the visual segment of the social web a set of online design principles from which she derived this intriguing homepage.” Enough said.
CADIE has also seeped into other ‘announcements’ today, including this one from Gmail.

Future of BPO Career in 2010
Even in the face of the ongoing US meltdown (see end of article for more details) the BPO industry provides some of the most lucrative job opportunities on the market today. But how do you get into this market? And, once there, what do you need to do to make the big bucks that people keep promising? We take a look at some of the answers.
Entry:
One of the most attractive things about some processes in the BPO industry is that they need only a basic 10+2 to enter. No international BPO unit hires an employee who is less than 18 years old, although domestic BPO outfits do (this isn’t a problem if you have a sneaky headhunter).
What is definitely required from a candidate is good communication skills and a willingness to learn. Many BPO companies hire candidates with basic qualifications and then train them. A company will pay a candidate more if s/he already possesses the necessary skills. Few companies will only hire employees who have had some kind of previous work experience.
High Attrition Industry:
Even after years of experience, the HR departments of BPO companies have to deal with huge attrition levels.
“Despite the fact that we offer starting salaries of Rs 12,000-15,000, much higher than the market rate for a job demanding the same qualifications, we’re experiencing annual attrition rates of 40-50 per cent,” says Bipin Chauhan, an HR manager at Pangea3, “It’s one of the biggest problems facing the industry.”
One of the reasons is the fact that many view the BPO industry as a short-term, lucrative careers option. The odd hours, routine nature of the work and the stress of constantly dealing with irate customers also take their toll on the workforce. These aren’t the only reasons though.
“Among those committed to the BPO industry, there are many reasons to leave a job,” says Lokesh Manu, who worked as a third person collection executive at 24/7. “A major one is that BPOs frequently poach each other’s employees, so you may get a better — that is, higher paying — job elsewhere. Also, many BPO employees move to Knowledge Process Outsourcing companies, which pay better and are also more interesting. And of course, some people, who enter the industry with the intention of staying, leave because they’re turned off by the hard partying lifestyle.”
Kinds of Work:
Other than the well-known call centres (called voice-based processes), there are many higher-end BPOs which handle value added functions like invoice processing and research.
Another trend which promises to prove to be huge is the emergence of Knowledge Process Outsourcing. These are companies that handle high-end back office transactions like data analysis, planning etc. Legal Process Outsourcing is an example of this trend. Such companies hire skilled workers: MBAs, lawyers etc and have attrition rates in single digits. They also pay much better than BPOs, since they require employees with CAs, PhDs etc.
Levels of Work:
An entry-level employee in a BPO unit is known, among other things, as an ‘agent’, ‘associate’ or ‘executive’. The entry-level positions exist for those with under two years of experience. At a voice-based BPO unit, the salary at entry level is roughly Rs 12,000-20,000 per month, depending on a person’s educational qualifications, experience and whether or not he or she has had any previous training, relieving the company of the need to train him or her.
At a non-voice based BPO unit, entry-level salaries vary from Rs 15,000-25,000. KPO units, requiring the high-level talent and qualifications that they do, pay Rs 18,000-30,000 per month.
BPO companies tend to have a relatively flat hierarchy. After three or four years of experience, an agent may be promoted to team leader. “We promote roughly a quarter of our employees in a given year,” says Bipin “This is because the industry — and the company — are expanding at breakneck speed, so there is plenty of space for an employee to take on new roles.”
A team leader in a voice-based BPO makes Rs 24,000-32,000 per month. A team leader in a non-voice BPO makes Rs 27,000-35,000 per month. A team leader in a KPO can rake in Rs 40,000+ a month.
The project manager is the highest level at which one is directly associated with processes in a company. A project manager at a voice-based BPO company makes between Rs 45,000-50,000 per month. A project manger at a non-voice BPO unit earns Rs 48,000-52,000 per month and a project manager at a KPO earns Rs 50,000 per month.
Training and Cross-Functionality :
BPO companies, on a scale and with willingness absent in other industries, encourage their employees to take up training programmes that strengthen their skills or help them develop new ones. Not only do they grant employees the leave required to take up these programmes but some even fund them.
These programmes vary from those that teach agents to communicate more effectively with customers to MBAs in certain disciplines for managers. The key to progress in a BPO is to acquire new skills. Since the structure of the organisation does not change very often, it is easy to evaluate what skills — and, by extension, courses — are needed and what impact they will have on your career.
BPO units reward a person who has the ability — and will — to acquire new skills. A crucial component of one’s career is internal job rotation: swapping job roles within the company itself, thus building a skillset that cuts across functions.
“This is very important as it sends out a very strong signal about the person and his work ethic.” says Lokesh, “Companies want someone who can take on new challenges. I’ve had many friends who have been re-hired — at good salaries — by companies they’ve left who want to use the skills that the employees have gained while working for another company.”
Employees will receive performance reviews every six months — in some company’s, every three — which serve to gauge an employees’ progress. At this point, new roles are assigned and training programmes recommended. This mobility is the key to success in the BPO sector, where talent is always short and good, enterprising employees are the most sought after commodity on the market.
Recession?:
With the US economy sagging and appearing ready to go into recession, BPO units are set to take a hit. However “It’s still a very high growth industry,” says Lokesh, “The cost-saving power of outsourcing is so powerful — and potential so vast — the industry will continue to grow even through hard times. The growth will be slowed down, and raises and promotions severely hit, but it’s still one of the best options available to a young professional.”

Social Networking & Viral Marketing in India
In today’s context social networking is about connecting with people at a low cost with existing devices and technology. Until a few years ago it used to be that you had six degrees of separation to connect with anybody in the world. With the advent of networking tools and search it has become easier to span those six degrees of separation and the ability to connect is now just a couple of mouse clicks away.
In India social networking might evolve differently when compared to the USA or other countries. But, before delving deeper into how social networking will evolve in India let us look at what is social networking.
What is Social Networking? Social network is defined as “a social structure made of nodes (which are generally individuals or organizations) that are tied by one or more specific types of relations, such as values, visions, idea, financial exchange, friends, kinship, dislike, conflict, trade, web links, sexual relations, disease transmission (epidemiology), or airline routes.” (Wikipedia)
This social networking concept spread to the computer world in the 1970s when researchers envisioned people connecting and interacting via computers. So in the pre-Mosaic and pre-Netscape days of the197s to mid-1990s you had Usenet groups for various interests. For instance, soc.culture.indian was a Usenet group where many Indian students in the USA got their questions answered about travel, graduate programs or connecting with their classmates. Out of soc.culture.indian grew various Usenet groups for different Indian states and languages.
During the dotcom boom you had social networking groups like sixdegrees.com, classmates.com , epinion, and others. What was different about these groups was an instant ability to browse and search through archives in an easy way. Then in early 2002 a new avatar of social networking took off in a big way with the launch of Friendster, Orkut, MySpace, Facebook and Linkedin among others. What these sites have in common is a rich (including multimedia) feature set that allows for sharing information easily and some sites allow for integration of third-party widgets and applications. So, social networking in its different avatars has been around in the USA for over 30 years (if you factor in the Usenet groups.)
Viral Marketing India:
In India social networking is a relatively new concept due to obvious reasons: low penetration of PCs and laptops and patchy broadband connections. What that means is that while people were aware of these social networking groups and applications they had limited means to access them. However in the last four years the social networking landscape has changed quite a bit in India. In a relatively short period of time certain social networking sites like Orkut and Fropper appear to have taken off, and new ones like Linkedin and Facebook are beginning to find traction among Indian users. What is driving this traction is still unclear. Is it the novelty of being able to network with people? Or, is there a genuine interest driving this adoption?

World’s Most Expensive Website by Forbes.com
The bidding started at $300,000 and blasted through the seven-figure mark before settling at $1.8 million. No, this wasn’t Sotheby’s–nor was the object d’art a Picasso. This battle was for the URL Seniors.com.
The action took place last week at the domain name auction, hosted by Moniker.com at the Grand Hyatt hotel in New York. The invitation-only participants, who seemed more suited to a Star Trek convention, would ultimately bid on 218 Web domain names that all together would sell for $10.8 million.
Many clocked six-figure price tags, far exceeding the industry average of $2,000 to $3,500, according to Matt Bentley, chief strategy officer for Sedo.com, a domain brokerage firm. Two broke the $1 million mark: Creditcheck.com fetched $3 million and Seniors.com nabbed $1.8 million.
Five Most Expensive Web addresses
Growth in online advertising and the shrinking pool of available names are pushing URL price tags to new heights. Three of the top five deals in history happened in the last two years. “You’re seeing a perfect storm created by converging factors that are resulting in an increase in domain values,” says Bentley.
Sex.com broke the eight-figured barrier in 2005 by nabbing $12 million, according to DN Journal, which tracks the domain name industry. Porn.com came in next, at $9.5 million last month, followed by Business.com ($7.5 million in 1999), Diamond.com ($7.5 million in 2006) and Beer.com (a reported $7 million in 1999).
During the tech boom, top-selling domains were based on brand appeal. Now it’s all about searchable keywords that are both generic and descriptive.
A big reason: With online ad spending increasing at a rate of 30% a year, owning domain names has become a business in itself. Entrepreneurs can flip them, like Miami condominiums, or they can sit on them and collect rent.
Say you buy Papercups.com. You may have no intention of selling paper cups, but because the name is so descriptive, chances are it will soar to the top of a Google (nasdaq: GOOG - news - people ) search stack.
In theory, your Web site could simply list a bunch of URLs leading to other sites that do sell paper cups; every time someone clicks one of those links, you collect a royalty–just as Google does with its AdWords service. Social networks like News Corp.’s (nyse: NWS - news - people ) MySpace and Facebook operate on this same ad-based principle.
“Today people are buying a lot of domain names as an advertising tool, rather than as a brand name for their Web site,” says Bentley.
Despite the rise in URL prices, in many cases you don’t have to be Donald Trump to get into this so-called parking game. And while many such sites are not huge moneymakers, they tend to more than cover the initial acquisition cost and annual registration fees of about $10. (One visitor to Moniker’s auction said he owns some 2,500 Web addresses.) What’s more, nontraditional asset-backed lenders like Domain Capital will even lend money backed by the value of a Web address.
New domains cost between $7 and $15 per year at domain sellers (or registrars) GoDaddy.com and Register.com. These middlemen pay a fixed fee to VeriSign (nasdaq: VRSN - news - people ), which controls the domain industry under the auspices of an international body called the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, which reports to the U.S. Department of Commerce.
With more than 100 million Web addresses already in use, many of the best have already been snatched up. As with real estate, if you want something truly valuable, you have to pay up.

Google co-founder’s Sergey Brin weds Anne Wojcicki
Google co-founder Sergey Brin and longtime sweetheart Anne Wojcicki, a biotech entrepreneur, exchanged vows recently in the Bahamas, guests confirmed to the Mercury News, in a ceremony so hush-hush that word didn’t leak out for more than a week.
Even the date remains secret: All sources would say was that it occurred sometime from May 4 to May 6.The ceremony combined the unconventional and traditional. The bride and groom and other members of the wedding party wore swimsuits, the better to get to an offshore sandbar, while other guests rode a boat. The bride wore white and the groom black, but otherwise the attire was not coordinated. About 60 guests attended, one of whom described the scene as “beautifully colorful.”
In accordance with their Jewish heritage, the couple, both of whom are 33, were wed under the traditional canopy, the chuppah, and Brin stomped on a glass symbolizing their connection to the faith. The ritual was performed by two friends, neither of whom are rabbis.
Most guests reached by the Mercury News spoke on the condition of anonymity or declined comment. Brin’s 83-year-old grandmother, Maya, speaking in a heavy Russian accent in a telephone interview, said the wedding was “very, very” nice before referring questions to Brin’s parents. Michael Brin, a mathematics professor at the University of Maryland and father of the groom, declined comment. Brin’s mother works as a research scientist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center.
The media’s interest created a dilemma for the bride’s mother, who declined comment even though Esther Wojcicki, a former newspaper reporter, is a much honored journalism teacher at Palo Alto High School. Wojcicki (pronounced woe-JIT-ski) is widely known as “Woj.”
The father of the bride, Stanford physics Professor Stan Wojcicki, evidently was low key with colleagues. When a caller Tuesday left a cryptic message of congratulations for the professor, his assistant, Judy Meo, assumed something exciting happened in Wojcicki’s neutrino research work.
“I just knew he was in the Bahamas for his daughter’s wedding,” Meo said later. “He kept it very quiet.” Including, she said, the identity of the groom, who with a net worth estimated at more than $16.6 billion ranks as one of America’s richest men.
The Wojcicki family lives on the Stanford campus. Anne, the youngest of three sisters, is a graduate of Gunn High School in Palo Alto who earned a degree in biology from Yale University. She did molecular biology research at the National Institutes of Health and University of California-San Diego before working as a health care consultant for Passport Capital, a San Francisco investment fund.
The secrecy surrounding the ceremony was extensive. Wedding guests who boarded the jetliner owned by Brin and Google co-founder Larry Page on May 4 were not told the destination, for instance.
Silicon Valley cognescenti, however, have known about the Wojcicki-Brin relationship for some time. It is a kind of only-in-Silicon Valley romance - a tale of two brainy entrepreneurial spirits that involves a garage.
The garage was part of a rented Menlo Park house that Susan Wojcicki, then a recent UCLA business school grad, sublet to Brin and business partner Larry Page in 1998, after they had left a Stanford graduate program to launch Google. They knew Susan through Brin’s girlfriend at the time and, later, Susan introduced Brin to her sister Anne.
The arrangement worked out well. Susan is now a Google vice president of product management. (And Brin’s ex-girlfriend is still said to be a friend.)
Earlier this year, Anne launched a biotech start-up called 23andMe, a personal genetics research business based in Mountain View. The third Wojcicki sister, Janet, is an assistant professor in the pediatrics department at UC-San Francisco Medical School.
Brin, who was 6 when his family emigrated from Russia, has been described as personable and witty. He is also credited with coining the Google moral code: “Don’t be evil.” Anne has been described as “down to earth” and “fun-loving.” Shots of the couple posted on Flickr by Web guru Esther Dyson show them clowning with the likes of Nobel Prize-winning physicist Murray Gell-Mann.
They plan to live in Palo Alto, one wedding guest said, and Wojcicki is expected to keep her name. People who care about such things note that they share the astrological sign of Leo.
In a 2001 interview for the Women.com Web site, Brin’s mother, Eugenia, indicated another priority. She was quoted as saying she hoped Sergey would find a wife who could match his wit - preferably Jewish: “I hope he would keep that in mind.”
“Well,” a guest said, “he certainly did.”
