PostHeaderIcon Google Adwords New Certification Programme 2010 Announces

New Google Adwords certification program 2010
Today we comentarte three initiatives related to the new certification program and Google AdWords API , which will benefit both agencies and their customers .

A. Google AdWords Certification

The program Google Advertising Profesionals is replaced by the new certification program from Google, more strict and strategic. Teams will be up to date with the latest tools and innovations for managing customer accounts more effectively .

In addition , Google is working to increase the recognition of certification and thus turn into a quality brand .

Then , we summarize the most important changes:

* Certifications Google: two states now recognize the individual skills ( for individuals ) and qualification associated with certification ( for companies) .

* Investment administered: have eliminated the requirement for managed investment individual qualification and reduced the requirement for companies to a minimum of 10,000 € (instead of € 100,000 ).

* New Google tests : now offer four tests and require that individuals pass at least two (the review of basic concepts and advanced one ) for the qualification.

* Badges of Google: are abandoning the old logos of companies and individuals with certification and currently give qualified companies the distinction of certification associated with Google. Individuals, after passing the required examinations will receive a certificate.

B. Launch Google search partners

In addition , Google will launch the directory search partner Google for small and medium advertisers can find and get a broader and more comprehensive information on agencies certified.

Starting today, you can choose to appear in the directory by changing the preferences in the profile of your company. Advertisers will be able to start using the Google search partners in a couple of weeks, once certified companies appear .

You can view more information and how to select this option here :

C. Promotion rates for AdWords API

PostHeaderIcon Nagetive PPC Marketing on Organic Way

Do You Know What You Don’t Want?

Most times it’s easier to figure out what you want instead of what you don’t want. For instance, let’s say you go into Starbucks, ready to try a Blueberries & Crème Frappuccino.

Now when you order, you don’t say, “Well, I want one of your fine beverages, but I don’t want an Espresso, Vanilla Latte, White Iced Tea” and so on. You simply order what it is you want. There’s no need to consider all the things you don’t want.

Well, if only PPC were that easy. In the PPC world there can be an almost endless variety of ways your potential customers can describe your products in a search phrase.  Fortunately, you can simplify that task by choosing to bid some of your terms using “broad match” which will display your ad for all search phrases that include your keyword.

However, using broad match might also result in your ad showing for phrases that have nothing to do with your products or services. For example, if you sell imported coffees and you bid broad match on the phrase “imported coffee”, your ad will show when someone searches on “imported coffee tables”.
The solution is to use negative keywords that will prevent your ad from showing. In this case, since you don’t sell coffee tables, coffee machines, or give away free coffee, you’d want to use the following negative keywords – “tables”, “machines”, “free” … plus many others.

The Largest Free Collection of Negativity

How do you go about finding all the negative keywords that apply to your products or services? The Engine Ready team has put together a valuable resource to help you quickly build your negative keyword list, by compiling a list of common terms, which in most cases can and should be used as negative keywords for most companies. We’ve provided the list in a .txt format, so you can easily copy and paste the listings into your Google, YSM and MSN accounts.

You’ll want to review the list carefully before applying them to your campaigns. There may be some words on our list that are actually desirable for your business or may even describe your products or services.

We’ve broken out our list of 420 negative keywords by major vertical, along with a list of general negative keywords that should work well for any industry.
Along with our free negative keyword list, your web analytics are a prime source of negative keyword information. Here you can find the actual query phrases your visitors searched on that led to a visit to your site. You can then determine which of these phrases are not related to your products and add them to your campaigns as negative keywords.

More Paths to Negative Nirvana

Here are 3 more useful resources for building out your negative keyword list:
1.    Organic Listings - Type in your keyword phrase into Google and review the organic listings for words that don’t describe your products or services. For example, if you sold barbeques, search on the word “barbeque” and you’d see dozens of negative keywords in the first 10 listings including recipes, steaks and sauce.

2.    Competition - Visit your competitor’s sites and note any products or services that you don’t offer. If for instance you only sell natural colored cowbells, you might find that your competitor offers them in blue, green and red. From that information, you can add those color words as negative keywords.

3.    Use the Google Keyword Tool with “Use Synonyms” box checked. If you sell every type, brand, size and color of luggage and luggage accessories available, you might think you don’t need negative keywords. However, this tool would have shown you that someone searching on “luggage car racks” would have prompted your ad to appear.

And, if your ad was not specific enough, like the one below, you might end up paying for that traffic.

Luggage - Up to 80% Off
Everything luggage. Shop the finest luggage
and accessories, quick shipping.

The Engine’s Rules on Negative Keywords

Here’s a table that shows you how the major PPC search engines allow you to setup your negative keywords. Note that MSN does not put a limit on the number of keywords. Instead the number of characters of all your negative keywords cannot exceed 1,022 characters.

Levels     Google     Yahoo     MSN
Account     n/a     250     n/a
Campaign     no limit     n/a     1,024 characters
Ad Group     no limit     250     1,024 characters
Keyword     n/a     n/a     1,024 characters

With Engine Ready’s list of negative keywords, it’s time to stop wasting your marketing budget attracting unqualified visitors. Do the research outlined above and use Engine Ready’s free listing of negative keywords and watch your CPA improve immediately.

Remember that using broad match without adding the right negative keywords is like drinking a lot of Blueberries & Crème Frappuccino’s without getting any exercise. They both have very undesirable consequences.

PostHeaderIcon Top 100 Google’s Best April Fool Events

Google is well known for its April Fool’s Day “product launches”. But many of them are amazingly complicated, with multiple pages, FAQs and complex screen grabs. These aren’t just hastily prepared jokes that were thought of the day before like the weak attempts by numerous other firms.

So we’ve listed our 10 favourite April Fool’s day Google faux-launches. Gmail isn’t here – despite it seeming like a hoax at the time and being launched on 1 April, that’s proved to be no joke. Though we bet someone at Google was enjoying one at the time.
1. Google MentalPlex

After two years of existence, Google decided it was time to have a play with what we’d believe it could do. MentalPlex involved a standard Google search page, complete with a spinning, eye-popping circle that you were meant to peer into to read your mind and determine what you are searching for. A vision of the future? Google even published a full fake FAQ on MentalPlex, too. To be fair though, all the search results were April Fool-related.

2. Google GBall

From Google Australia this year, the Gball page is probably even more amusing than CADIE (see below). “This weekend around the country, the gBall(BETA) will change Australian rules football as we know it.” The ball can be found by Google technology when it’s lost as well as perform other handy Aussie Rules functions: “gBall vibrates if player agents or talent scouts want to speak to you…find your lost gBall online using Google Maps.”

3. The PageRank reveal

A particular favourite of the TechRadar team. After continuing speculation about its PageRank technology, Google decided it would tell us all what was going on. PigeonRank was the result.

“By collecting flocks of pigeons in dense clusters, Google is able to process search queries at speeds superior to traditional search engines, which typically rely on birds of prey, brooding hens or slow-moving waterfowl to do their relevance rankings.”

“When a search query is submitted to Google, it is routed to a data coop where monitors flash result pages at blazing speeds. When a relevant result is observed by one of the pigeons in the cluster, it strikes a rubber-coated steel bar with its beak, which assigns the page a PigeonRank value of one. For each peck, the PigeonRank increases. Those pages receiving the most pecks, are returned at the top of the user’s results page with the other results displayed in pecking order.” Top marks for ingenuity, at least.

4. Google Gulp

The idea behind this fake 2005 beverage was a rip-off of the concept behind the original Gmail – that you had to be ‘invited’ to get it by somebody who’d already bought it. “You can pick up your own supply of this ‘limited release’ product simply by turning in a used Gulp Cap at your local grocery store.

“How to get a Gulp Cap? Well, if you know someone who’s already been “gulped,” they can give you one. And if you don’t know anyone who can give you one, don’t worry – that just means you aren’t cool. But very, very (very!) soon, you will be.” Naturally it was a beta…
5. Google TiSP

Possibly the most ridiculous Google fool, though PigeonRank was pretty close. Google’s Toilet Internet Service Provider was intended to take advantage of sewage piping to bring 8Mbps broadband to your toilet “vacuum-sealed to prevent water damage”. The user would simply drop a cable down the toilet, then flush it. “Mac and Linux support coming soon.” The how it works page about ‘Going with the flow’ is also worth a read.

6. Gmail Paper

Google changed the log-in page for Gmail for this one. “Everyone loves Gmail,” read the blurb on the page. “But not everyone loves email, or the digital era. What ever happened to stamps, filing cabinets, and the mailman? Well, you asked for it, and it’s here. We’re bringing it back.”

Another theme with Gmail’s fools is that they tend to include amusing fake testimonials on the page. “It’s paper, plain and easy. I sometimes find myself wondering: what will Google think of next? Cardboard?”

7. Gmail Custom Time

Another one involving Gmail was more subtle. A new red link in the top right of users’ inboxes announced a new feature – Gmail Custom Time. It supposedly enabled users to pre-date messages but “you’ll only be able to send email back until 1 April, 2004, the day we launched Gmail. If we were to let you send an email from Gmail before Gmail existed, well, that would be like hanging out with your parents before you were born - crazy talk. It also claimed “Gmail utilizes an e-flux capacitor” – we think Doc Brown would have something to say about that.

8. Blogger “Google Weblogs (beta)

This ‘enhancement’ for Blogger was billed as “the next revolution in personal publishing”. The premise was that Google would use its algorithms to put your best content at the top of your blog page. “Even if your later work goes downhill your previous posts will still shine. Unsure of what to post about? Just click “I’m Feeling Lucky” and we’ll “take care” of the rest!”

Some of the features actually sounded appealing. “No more template languages to mess with or sidebars to get right. Our advanced Google algorithms automatically populate your blog’s sidebar with the most relevant possible content.”

9. Google Romance

From the year after comes this gem. Increasingly Google’s fools have become more complex, with extra pages and references elsewhere to support the theme. Romance said that “dating is a search problem. Solve it with Google”.

Google also isn’t afraid to poke fun at itself and how it does things. “Using our Soulmate Search, [you’ll] get back search results that could, in theory, include the love of your life. Then we’ll send you both on a Contextual Date, which we’ll pay for while delivering to you relevant ads that we and our advertising partners think will help produce the dating results you’re looking for.”

10. CADIE. Or is it MySpace?

Last night, Google launched Cadie, the world’s first “artificial intelligence” tasked-array system. “Tonight we’re pleased to announce that just moments ago, the world’s first Cognitive Autoheuristic Distributed-Intelligence Entity (CADIE) was switched on and began performing some initial functions.”

“Earlier today, for instance, CADIE deduced from a quick scan of the visual segment of the social web a set of online design principles from which she derived this intriguing homepage.” Enough said.

CADIE has also seeped into other ‘announcements’ today, including this one from Gmail.

PostHeaderIcon Google uses Britain as gambling guinea pig

Bookmakers and online casinos will be able to advertise on Google, the world’s most popular internet search engine, from today.

The company, which yesterday received royal approval when the Queen visited its British headquarters near Victoria station, was condemned as “irresponsible” by MPs and church leaders for lifting its four-year ban and allowing gambling companies to buy “sponsored links” on its site in Britain.

Google introduced a global ban on gambling adverts on its site in 2004, but decided to end it for British customers after rules on television advertising for bookmakers, casinos and gambling websites were relaxed.

Google insisted that all advertisers using the service would have to be regulated in Britain or Europe and would have to have internet links to organisations helping problem gamblers. But critics condemned the move, saying the adverts could attract people hit by the global economic downturn.

The Church of England led attacks on the decision, which came a day after figures were released showing a 25 per cent increase in people seeking help with gambling problems.

A CofE spokesman said: “Whatever people are searching for on Google, it probably isn’t the chance to risk developing a serious problem that could have a hugely negative effect on themselves and their family. As people are facing more financial uncertainty, the fantasy of instant wealth could become particularly attractive and the consequences of losses correspondingly serious.”

Figures released this week by the gambling addiction charity GamCare showed a huge increase in the numbers of people seeking help. Nearly 38,000 called its betting hotline last year, compared with just more than 30,000 the year before. Callers had racked up average debts of £17,500.

Last night, MPs of all parties warned Google not to exacerbate the problems of online gambling. Peter Kilfoyle, the former Labour Defence minister, said: “It’s the height of stupidity. It seems probably the worst of times for people to be encouraging gambling… after we have been facing a financial crisis built on reckless gambling in the markets.”

Don Foster, the Liberal Democrat Culture spokesman, added: “Clearly this is perfectly legal but it is of huge concern that we have further expansion of the advertising of internet gambling when we know it creates problems.”

Jeremy Hunt, the shadow Culture minister, added: “At a time when calls to GamCare have increased by a quarter I would hope Google would exercise some corporate social responsibility… At the very least [it] should ensure all advertisers meet UK gambling regulations irrespective of their country of origin.”

The Salvation Army said the move was “effectively encouraging vulnerable people into debt” warning that it contributed to a “creeping normalisation” of gambling in society.

A spokesman said: “With widespread use of the internet, use of online lotteries and betting opportunities [are] increasing. And with 16- to 24-year-olds among the most frequent users of the internet, it is not unrealistic to be concerned this group will be particularly affected by this poor decision.”

Google insisted that its UK-based advertisers would have to be registered with the British Gambling Commission before advertising, while European operators would also have to be licensed in their home country. All would have to have links to the GamCare website.

He said it would be for companies to decide which search words would trigger adverts for their services but stressed that the advertisements could be screened out by users.

James Cashmore of Google said: “We’ve decided to amend our policy to allow text ads to appear against search queries related to gambling in Great Britain. We hope this will enhance the search experience for users and help advertisers connect with interested consumers. Gambling ads will automatically be classified as Non-Family Safe which means they will not show on any search where the user has applied the Safe Search filter.”

PostHeaderIcon American Airlines sues Yahoo over search terms

American Airlines is suing Yahoo Inc. for trademark infringement, a case similar to one that the nation’s largest airline settled this summer against Google Inc.

The airline complains that when computer users enter American’s trademark terms such as AAdvantage, the name of its frequent-flier program, in a search they can be directed to competitors who pay Yahoo for the traffic.

American filed its lawsuit last week in U.S. District court in Fort Worth for unspecified damages, legal costs and money to run a “corrective” advertising campaign.

Kelley Benander of Yahoo said, “We have confidence in our trademark policies and are prepared to defend them in court.”

Yahoo’s policy allows advertisers to use the trademark terms of others only if it refers to the trademark “without creating a likelihood of consumer confusion.”

American, a unit of Fort Worth-based AMR Corp., reached a confidential settlement of a similar lawsuit against Google this summer, also in federal court in Fort Worth.

Each side agreed to pay its own legal fees, and American got nothing from Google. But Google searches for “American Airlines” or “AAdvantage” no longer produce paid ads along the right side of the portal screen.

Google had prevailed in previous lawsuits filed by other companies over their paid search advertising practices using trademark terms.

Tim Smith, a spokesman for American, said Tuesday that the airline is suing Yahoo to protect its intellectual property and prevent confusion among consumers and the diversion of shoppers looking for American’s products.

Smith said the dispute centers on Yahoo’s practice of selling American’s trademark terms to other companies for use in Internet searches. He said the airline saw value in Internet searches and hoped to continue a “professional and amicable relationship” with Yahoo.

PostHeaderIcon Future of BPO Career in 2010

Even in the face of the ongoing US meltdown (see end of article for more details) the BPO industry provides some of the most lucrative job opportunities on the market today. But how do you get into this market? And, once there, what do you need to do to make the big bucks that people keep promising? We take a look at some of the answers.

Entry:
One of the most attractive things about some processes in the BPO industry is that they need only a basic 10+2 to enter. No international BPO unit hires an employee who is less than 18 years old, although domestic BPO outfits do (this isn’t a problem if you have a sneaky headhunter).
What is definitely required from a candidate is good communication skills and a willingness to learn. Many BPO companies hire candidates with basic qualifications and then train them. A company will pay a candidate more if s/he already possesses the necessary skills. Few companies will only hire employees who have had some kind of previous work experience.

High Attrition Industry:
Even after years of experience, the HR departments of BPO companies have to deal with huge attrition levels.

“Despite the fact that we offer starting salaries of Rs 12,000-15,000, much higher than the market rate for a job demanding the same qualifications, we’re experiencing annual attrition rates of 40-50 per cent,” says Bipin Chauhan, an HR manager at Pangea3, “It’s one of the biggest problems facing the industry.”

One of the reasons is the fact that many view the BPO industry as a short-term, lucrative careers option. The odd hours, routine nature of the work and the stress of constantly dealing with irate customers also take their toll on the workforce. These aren’t the only reasons though.

“Among those committed to the BPO industry, there are many reasons to leave a job,” says Lokesh Manu, who worked as a third person collection executive at 24/7. “A major one is that BPOs frequently poach each other’s employees, so you may get a better — that is, higher paying — job elsewhere. Also, many BPO employees move to Knowledge Process Outsourcing companies, which pay better and are also more interesting. And of course, some people, who enter the industry with the intention of staying, leave because they’re turned off by the hard partying lifestyle.”

Kinds of Work:
Other than the well-known call centres (called voice-based processes), there are many higher-end BPOs which handle value added functions like invoice processing and research.

Another trend which promises to prove to be huge is the emergence of Knowledge Process Outsourcing. These are companies that handle high-end back office transactions like data analysis, planning etc. Legal Process Outsourcing is an example of this trend. Such companies hire skilled workers: MBAs, lawyers etc and have attrition rates in single digits. They also pay much better than BPOs, since they require employees with CAs, PhDs etc.

Levels of Work:
An entry-level employee in a BPO unit is known, among other things, as an ‘agent’, ‘associate’ or ‘executive’. The entry-level positions exist for those with under two years of experience. At a voice-based BPO unit, the salary at entry level is roughly Rs 12,000-20,000 per month, depending on a person’s educational qualifications, experience and whether or not he or she has had any previous training, relieving the company of the need to train him or her.

At a non-voice based BPO unit, entry-level salaries vary from Rs 15,000-25,000. KPO units, requiring the high-level talent and qualifications that they do, pay Rs 18,000-30,000 per month.

BPO companies tend to have a relatively flat hierarchy. After three or four years of experience, an agent may be promoted to team leader. “We promote roughly a quarter of our employees in a given year,” says Bipin “This is because the industry — and the company — are expanding at breakneck speed, so there is plenty of space for an employee to take on new roles.”

A team leader in a voice-based BPO makes Rs 24,000-32,000 per month. A team leader in a non-voice BPO makes Rs 27,000-35,000 per month. A team leader in a KPO can rake in Rs 40,000+ a month.

The project manager is the highest level at which one is directly associated with processes in a company. A project manager at a voice-based BPO company makes between Rs 45,000-50,000 per month. A project manger at a non-voice BPO unit earns Rs 48,000-52,000 per month and a project manager at a KPO earns Rs 50,000 per month.

Training and Cross-Functionality :
BPO companies, on a scale and with willingness absent in other industries, encourage their employees to take up training programmes that strengthen their skills or help them develop new ones. Not only do they grant employees the leave required to take up these programmes but some even fund them.

These programmes vary from those that teach agents to communicate more effectively with customers to MBAs in certain disciplines for managers. The key to progress in a BPO is to acquire new skills. Since the structure of the organisation does not change very often, it is easy to evaluate what skills — and, by extension, courses — are needed and what impact they will have on your career.

BPO units reward a person who has the ability — and will — to acquire new skills. A crucial component of one’s career is internal job rotation: swapping job roles within the company itself, thus building a skillset that cuts across functions.

“This is very important as it sends out a very strong signal about the person and his work ethic.” says Lokesh, “Companies want someone who can take on new challenges. I’ve had many friends who have been re-hired — at good salaries — by companies they’ve left who want to use the skills that the employees have gained while working for another company.”

Employees will receive performance reviews every six months — in some company’s, every three — which serve to gauge an employees’ progress. At this point, new roles are assigned and training programmes recommended. This mobility is the key to success in the BPO sector, where talent is always short and good, enterprising employees are the most sought after commodity on the market.

Recession?:
With the US economy sagging and appearing ready to go into recession, BPO units are set to take a hit. However “It’s still a very high growth industry,” says Lokesh, “The cost-saving power of outsourcing is so powerful — and potential so vast — the industry will continue to grow even through hard times. The growth will be slowed down, and raises and promotions severely hit, but it’s still one of the best options available to a young professional.”

Google’s been pretty busy recently, launching its Chrome browser at the start of the month and following up with news that it’s currently working on a project to digitise the world’s newspapers so that they can be browsed online.

The massive undertaking has actually been underway for a couple of years already as in 2006 Google began archiving issues of the New York Times and Washington Post.

The idea is that you’ll be able to browse the papers in their original format complete with photos, crosswords adverts and all.

“We’re launching an initiative to make more old newspapers accessible and searchable online by partnering with newspaper publishers to digitize millions of pages of news archives,” says the internet giant.

The content will be available via its news archive service and will run alongside existing digitised material from relevant publications where possible. The database is being built as we speak, though there’s no details on exactly when it’ll be finished. We imagine there will be some late nights ahead. - Paul Lester
