PostHeaderIcon Google Real Time Search - Good News for Social Media and Media Industry

Google, the internet search engine, has launched real-time search, to give its users up-to-the-second information.

The search engine has also today celebrated the creator of Popeye, Elzie Crisler Segar, who is the latest person to be recognised with a Google Doodle.

Real-time search data will be collaborated from over a billion pages on the web, and is to include updates from social networking and micro-blogging sites such Twitter, MySpace and Facebook.

Amit Singhal, Google fellow, wrote on the Google Blog: “First, we’re introducing new features that bring your search results to life with a dynamic stream of real-time content from across the web. Now, immediately after conducting a search, you can see live updates from people on popular sites like Twitter and FriendFeed, as well as headlines from news and blog posts published just seconds before.

“When they are relevant, we’ll rank these latest results to show the freshest information right on the search results page.

“Whether it’s an eyewitness tweet, a breaking news story or a fresh blog post, you can find it on Google right after it’s published on the web.”

PostHeaderIcon YouTube - Latest Video Submission SEO Tips

Many people are surprised to learn that YouTube is the second-largest search engine. It’s bigger than Yahoo and bigger than Bing, according to comScore. Therefore it is a shock to many search marketing professionals that clients, including large brands, neglect to formulate or act on strategies for YouTube optimisation.

Of course, YouTube isn’t a perfect fit for every company, but anybody who does business online should consider taking advantage of the huge opportunities for brand impressions available on YouTube. Even if the product or service you sell might be considered dry or boring, think about creating a series of funny or interesting videos that relates indirectly to your core business.

Remember, a well optimised video and company YouTube channel will benefit the core website search engine optimisation strategy. Also, we do not have to create traditional TV commercials to get people talking about our brand.

Optimising YouTube pages requires us to follow the same rules as any other search engine optimisation (SEO) project, and all SEO can be broken down into three disciplines: content, linking, and architecture. Since YouTube is going to dictate how the page is built architecturally, that leaves us with opportunities to improve the on-page content that boosts the link popularity of the page.

There are primarily two places we can rank well for our target keywords. The first place is on YouTube itself. The other place our videos can rank well is on the search engines themselves. Remember that every video on YouTube has its own page, called a view page, that can be optimized the same as any other page on the web.

The videos themselves are invisible to search engines. YouTube converts the video files you upload into Flash, and search engines have a difficult time understanding what’s inside a Flash file, especially a video.

YouTube automatically generates meta tags for every view page. The name of the video becomes the title tag, the description (found in the “more info” section) becomes the meta description tag, and the YouTube tags become the content of the page’s meta keywords tag.

Quick tips for video optimization:

* Include links in profile pages wherever possible. First decide where you want to drive the traffic from your channel/profile page, and then include links to those pages as much as possible. Ideally, you will be linking to other social media profiles like Facebook and Twitter in order to extend the social media experience, but you also might want to drive clicks to a customized landing page. There are many more opportunities to place clickable links than there appear to be at first glance.

* Include appropriate keywords in the name of the video, and use the word “video” when appropriate. The title is the most important piece of information that the search engines have about your video, and considering that most searchers include the word “video” when searching for a video, this inclusion boosts the relevance of your page as a search result.

* For each video, write a unique, keyword-rich description that includes a URL. Put the URL at the beginning. This way, even when the “more info” option is collapsed, the user will still see the link. Also, a video’s description is the next-best indicator to search engines of the video’s content, right behind the title. Use this space to place relevant keywords when appropriate.

* Provide video transcripts if possible. Until the technology improves, YouTube and other online videos are practically invisible to most search engines. Therefore, the search engines are only guessing about the content of your video based on the information they parse from the title, description, and tags. But if you have a full transcript of your video placed in the description, the search engines will fully understand the video.

* Take advantage of YouTube’s captions and annotation features. You can add notes, subtitles, descriptions, and links directly over the top of the video. Currently only links to other YouTube pages are clickable, but try this: You remembered to add a link at the top of your description, right? Place a call to action over the video that says, “Click here to become a fan of our Facebook page.”

* Tag your videos with keywords. Along with the title and the description, tags help the search engines identify the video’s content. If you have relevant keywords, place them here.

* Encourage participation. For each video, there are options for “Broadcasting and Sharing.” It’s best to open commenting and embedding as much as possible, but remember that you will need to monitor your videos for spam and naughty comments. Also consider posting your videos as responses to other popular videos. This is a good way to piggyback on the success of someone else’s video and divert some of those eyes to your own content.

* YouTube pulls thumbnails from the one quarter, half, and three quarters marks of every video. You can then choose which thumbnail is displayed. If it’s not disruptive to do so, try to manipulate your video so that a compelling image appears at one of these points. Thumbnails have a large impact in a video’s click-through.

* Take advantage of YouTube Insights. This analytics feature of YouTube is robust compared to other video sites and can provide information such as demographics and when people abandoned viewing specific videos. This data can help you improve future submissions.

PostHeaderIcon Facebook and Twitter were attacked by hackers

Facebook TwitterFacebook and Twitter were attacked by hackers with denial-of-service attack on August 6. In a denial-of-service attack a Web site or server is bombarded with more traffic than it can handle, effectively causing online congestion. Such attacks are done from multiple computers and usually hackers send malware data to the target site in unison. After initial denial of any such attack, both Facebook and Twitter have now acknowledged attack on their site by denial-of-service attack.

In a blog hosted on an unaffected server, Twitter Co-Founder Biz Stone acknowledged the attack. “Attacks such as this are malicious efforts orchestrated to disrupt and make unavailable services such as online banks, credit card payment gateways, and in this case, Twitter for intended customers or users. We are defending against this attack now and will continue to update our status blog as we continue to defend and later investigate,” he added.

Twitter had declared their scaling problems in early 2007. And as much as the great Twitter outages of 2007 and 2008 frustrated users, these outages are much more serious. Twitter has come a long way since 2007 as 45 million people worldwide now rely on Twitter as a communication platform. They will have to scale if they really want to be the ‘Pulse of the Planet.’

Facebook issued an early statement on its site saying that, “Earlier this morning, Facebook encountered network issues related to an apparent distributed denial-of-service attack that resulted in degraded service for some users. No user data was at risk and we have restored full access to the site for most users. We’re continuing to monitor the situation to ensure that users have the fast and reliable experience they’ve come to expect from Facebook.” As compared to Twitter, Facebook and Google were able to minimize any impact to their sites along with sites such as Blogger, YouTube and other Google Sites.

Pingdom, a site that tracks server uptime, states that Twitter was offline for about two and a half hours. Last time, Twitter was down due to unplanned downtime was on May 30 this year due to a software error. Denial-of-service attacks are becoming common nowadays. According to Information week, Gawker Media sites and AT&T were hit with it earlier this week. Last week, Internet Systems Consortium warned that BIND 9, the most common domain name server, contained a vulnerability that could be exploited to crash the server, leading to a denial-of-service. The company said that the vulnerability is actively being exploited and it urged users of the software to update immediately.

Amongst all this commotion an interesting piece of news has emerged. A pro-Georgian blogger with accounts on Twitter, Facebook, LiveJournal and Google’s Blogger and YouTube was targeted in a denial-of-service attack that led to the site-wide outage at Twitter and problems at the other sites, according to a Facebook executive. “It was a simultaneous attack across a number of properties targeting him to keep his voice from being heard. We’re actively investigating the source of the attacks and we hope to be able to find out the individuals involved in the back end and to take action against them if we can,” said Max Kelly, Chief Security Officer at Facebook to CNET. The blogger whose account was attacked uses the account name ‘Cyxymu’ (the name of a town in the Republic of Georgia). Kelly declined to speculate on whether Russian nationalists were behind the attack.

PostHeaderIcon 2009 Top 25 Social Community Website

1. RoboForm is still on the list: with literally hundredsof profiles, all with usernames and passwords, I honestly do not know what I would do without Roboform to keep track of them: i can even create an identity for a client and automatically fill in the details into any number of web forms for them: I use the paid version but there is also a free version for the beginner.

2. Tubemogul.com Very cool, you upload your videos to one place, and they are automatically syndicated to up to 20 others in optimized format, including Youtube and Google video!  You can track statistics about your videos and do all kinds of cool things, a must have for video bloggers.

3. Veoh.com Like TubeMogul, Veoh allows you to fill in a couple of usernames and passwords for Youtube and Google (but not as many),  but Veoh has a very robust and attractive video player which displays the video nicely on your website, and allow for channels that make it very easy to show a streaming medleyof videos that you group together.  We have had some issues with  loading slowly at times ( with  their explosive growth is size), but they are worth looking at for aesthetics, and we still use them some.  In some cases you want the videos to be hosted and played on your website streaming right from Youtube  for the sake of the rankings boost you get from the click-through traffic.

4. Realtown: Realtown is owned and fed by the owners of Real Estate Magazine (RISMedia.com), Epro, Lowes, InternetCrusade and many other established icons in the Real Estate industry.  they have just re-done their site (went live in October) with new modern social networking features, and they are about to become the forums and local news areas for RISMedia.com with their new site launch.  Any group at Realtown will rank immediately for longtail searches, just as those areas of RISMedia.com do now: I know this because I was consulted on how to insure that, and I tested it last week in my first post: it took less than an hour!  They have established a way of dividing up neighborhoods by population instead of Zip codes, and they are about to go live in the communities area.  I encourage the reader to join, join a group, heck start one, get into the Realtown store while there is room!  What they are attempting to do (the grass roots localization of the web) has been attempted before, but I believe they have the resources and the software to pull it off, and they will have the reach any minute!.

5.    Plaxo: Plaxo is kind of an online  open-social contact management hub, which recently added profiles and many modern features to its already accessible from anywhere excellent Internet based contact management application - you can import your contacts from Outlook, Linkedin, Google, Yahoo and others - then sync them with the same and your cell phone, so that you can always stay in touch with many interactive features and restore everything at will - wonderful -plugs right into my Outlook.

6.  Meetup: Social networking with the whole world at will, with actual local meet up events and clubs in person, great, I have contacted and secured businesss here and it is free.  Why re-invent the wheel, start your local leads or affinity group here: it can feed your website, and you will rank  instantly on google for the name of your profile!

14 of the 15 recomendations from last year still apply: we must have picked them well: here they are:

7.  Activerain - social networking profiles and blog for Realtors and vendors
Most people do not notice that you do not need to be a Realtor to join, you can be a vendor like me, and the profiles and blogs are not bad for Search Engine Placement link-building campaigns.

8. Alexa - Traffic and Website Statistics and Archived Information and Reviews
An Amazon.com company, we use it to get quick information about any website according to everyone who has the Alexa toolbar - which collects a wealth of information and statistics. They also archive old websites, and provide links to reviews on amazon.com.

9. Associated Content - Associated Content is a buyer and seller, syndicator of user-generated, user-filtered content
One of the most successful and well traveled sites on the web, this site is a must for branding and link building: your clout and pagerank build as an author - you can even get paid for content, although that is not what I use it for.

10. Delicious - social bookmarking, link-sharing
You install a toolbar that allows you to keep a set of favorites online where you can access them from any computer, and share them with the world, if you like, as an online resource. Excellent for traffic building and link-popularity, I recommend that you add and use the toolbar.

11. Digg.com - social bookmarking popularity-driven site:
This site is great for traffic-building for your articles and blogs, and also for link-popularity for your main site and blog: users submit, describe, review, and rank each others preferences. It is also great for getting real-time feedback on what people actually like and do not like about what you and/or others who write stuff that you read may have to say.

12. Feedburner - a feed aggregator that allows you to monitor various statistics about your feeds,
make them available in every format to your visitors, even sell advertising fed into the feed.

13. Google Adwords Keyword Tool - find out what words are searched for, and how much competition there is to rank for those words
To use it intelligently, you must understand the concept of pack mentality: we track trends in key industries like real estate and get to where the market is going first; many Realtors search daily for the same things, but they are not always each others target market - so be careful how you interpret the results from such tools.

14.  Google Friend Connect :
Google Friend Connect instantly awakens and strengthens the community that visits your site by enriching it with social features.

15. Linkedin - most well-known business-to-business social networking site
Linkedin was originally for job and employment placement services - it is a very full-featured business-to-business networking site.

16.  Mybloglog.com - Blog syndication, networking, tracking, resources, and communities
Everyone with a blog should be here, and I highly recommend some of their tools, like the one that lets you see who has read this lately at the right of this page! I visit and network with them!

17. Myspace.com - the most well known social media site
If you thought is was just for kids, think again: the average age is over forty, and a profile here can be used for link-popularity and business networking, not just dating and file sharing!

18. www.socialmarker.com - Instant Book Marking Tools Online
Social bookmarking is a powerful tool in promoting a website. But going through all of those social bookmarking sites is very time-consuming and downloading all toolbars is madness. That’s where SocialMarker.com comes in, the free service designed to reduce the time and effort needed to socially bookmark a website.

19. Stumbleupon - another social bookmarking site very useful for traffic building:

20. Technorati.com - a blog, news and file sharing aggregator
Another must for bloggers: you can tag your posts and make them available to millions by keyword search

20. Yahoo! Answers - Home

Yahoo! Answers is a new way to find and share information. You can ask questions on any topic, get answers from real people, and share your insights and Knowledge.

21. Facebook : Facebook is a social utility that connects people with friends and others who work, study and live around them.

PostHeaderIcon Google off list of 20 most trusted companies

Facebook, Apple, Yahoo, Verizon and FedEx for the first time have made an annual ranking of the top 20 most trusted companies in the United States.

Google, However, dropped off the list, released today by the Ponemon Institute and TRUSTe in San Francisco, as did Countrywide Financial, Bank of America (which acquired Countrywide) and Weight Watchers.

Financial companies were tarred by the subprime mortgage crisis and the subsequent meltdown of investment banks on Wall Street, said Dr. Larry Ponemon, who conducted the survey, but not all financial companies were equally hit.

Nationwide retained its place as the ninth most trusted company, and U.S. Bank and eLoan managed to stay in the top 20, although both dropped a few places.

At No. 1, for the fourth year in a row, was American Express, followed by eBay, IBM, Amazon and Johnson & Johnson.

This is the fifth year the survey has been conducted.

The Ponemon Institute got 6,500 people - weighted by age, gender and household income to match the U.S. census - to name the five companies they trusted most and least.

Concern about privacy is higher than ever, the survey showed. Less than half of consumers - 45 percent - feel they have control over their personal information. That’s down from 48 percent last year and 56 percent in 2006.

More than 60 percent said identity theft negatively affects how they think about a company, and more than half get concerned when a company sends notifications of data breaches.

“Consumers are getting more astute about” privacy, said Fran Maier, the CEO of TRUSTe, which evaluates online privacy practices.

Ponemon said some companies, like IBM, might be trusted because they have big brands; others, like Apple, because consumers like their products.

He speculated that people felt sorry for Yahoo because of its difficulties with Microsoft and Google, neither of which made the list.

“Google (and Microsoft) suffer from big company syndrome,” Ponemon said. “People figure that if you’re big and collecting data, there must be an issue.”

In general, Ponemon said, companies that are seen by consumers as most trusted do tend to have good privacy practices.

Facebook’s chief privacy officer, Chris Kelly, said the company has worked hard to earn people’s trust by giving Facebook users more choices over what happens to their personal information.

“It shouldn’t be binary, where you either reveal a piece of data to everyone on the Internet or Facebook or not at all,” he said. “We think people want to share more information, but they want choices.”

Half of the top 20 this year have won seals of approval by TRUSTe, which co-sponsored the survey but had nothing to do with conducting it.

PostHeaderIcon Facebook Hits 100 Million Users

Fast growing social network Facebook has hit the 100 million users mark, according to a statement today by Dave Morin, the company’s Senior Platform Manager.

How does that compare to MySpace’s ascent? A guy named Rick appears to have become MySpace’s 100 millionth registered user in 2006. MySpace took 3 years after launch to hit that magic number; for Facebook it took 4 years and 6 months.

Drama
The first years of MySpace were characterized by music and spam, while Facebook’s beginnings were in college parties and drama. That drama continues today. For example, the company reports that only 20% of its 100 million users have visited the dramatically redesigned version of the site by clicking on a button at the top of their screen in recent weeks. Facebook users don’t like change.

The company wants to spin the 20% number as a positive embrace of the changes (and the ordinarily fabulous Eric Eldon at Venture Beat buys that spin for some reason) but in fact it fits in the history of conflict between Facebook and its users.

Innovation and Monetization
None the less, the site is growing by leaps and bounds. 100 million registered users probably includes a substantial number of regularly active users. Now if only the company could figure out how to monetize those numbers as well as they’d like.

We believe they will probably figure it out. More interesting to us is watching Facebook develop its feature set, leading then falling behind in innovation. 100 million registered users is a lot of people to innovate with.

Unfortunately for Facebook, sometimes it seems that those people are not interested in innovation or monetization - they just want to communicate with each other. I guess when you call yourself a “utility” some people expect you to remain unexciting.

PostHeaderIcon Google Insight for Search Tool for SEO Enthusiast

Google has introduced an addition to both Google Trends and AdWords called “Insights for Search” that is intended to help you “see what the world is searching for” (in their own words). Using this tool everyone will be able to better understand what people search for on Google and see details for certain keywords across various geographic regions, verticals and time periods for more insight.

I have played with Insights for Search for about half an hour and I can definitely recommend it to everyone who wants to understand internet users better - be it internet marketers or even bloggers trying to determine what type of content people could find more engaging.

Insights for Search offer quite a number of potential uses. One of the most powerful ones is that you can actually narrow your search by categories (with quite a long list available) to figure out which keywords are more popular in certain categories.

An additional advantage is that you can actually click the ‘Search’ button without typing anything into the search field and this will give you immediate access to the most popular rising terms across all categories and regions. What’s more, if you narrow this empty search to a certain category, you will receive the list of the most popular search terms of all times for this category. For example, in the “Internet” category people searched mostly for “yahoo”, “msn”, “myspace”, “gmail”, “messenger”, “google”, “mail”, “web”, “torrent”, and “hotmail”:

It is even more interesting to look at the heat map showing where the term you are interested in is popular. Below you will see the worldwide map for “web 2.0″ that proves that web 2.0 is mostly popular in the South Eastern Asia countries (quite a surprise to me, actually):

Barry Schwartz over at Search Engine Land has a number of great examples on how you can understand what people are most interested in but I think the general idea is clear and everyone can come up with a number of ways to use the service.

Where I see the opportunity for bloggers is that if you are trying to decide if you should write a blog post about Facebook or LinkedIn today, simply do a search for “Facebook, LinkedIn” (where the comma indicates OR and you can compare up to 5 comma separated terms) and see which network is more popular among internet users today. Maybe this will help you make a quick decision depending on what will bring you better search traffic. Of course I am not suggesting that you build your editorial policy based on such data and there’s no doubt that you’d be better off writing insightful posts on the topic you care about than about some nonsense people seem to be fascinated this month. But still it won’t hurt if you understand the hot trends anyway.

Same is also true for all SEO types: if you make your living creating keyword-rich content (and doing tricks to make it noticeable), it will no doubt be useful to see if you should expect any search traffic for those keywords at all. So I think Insights for Search will soon become quite a popular tool among SEO specialists helping them figure out the potential of this or that keyword better.

Of course, Google search is not the only tool online that people use to demonstrate their interest in this or that particular topic. For example, instead of searching for the topic on Google, people may keep reading blogs on the subject daily via feed reader without doing any single search on it. But I think the general trend is clear anyway: if the information is of interest to people, they will most certainly interact with it everywhere - starting from searching for it and on to watching videos about it or bookmarking some pieces of content about this very topic. So even if does not let you in the minds of your potential users, you will at least get a general idea of what they care about.

PostHeaderIcon Social Networking & Viral Marketing in India

In today’s context social networking is about connecting with people at a low cost with existing devices and technology. Until a few years ago it used to be that you had six degrees of separation to connect with anybody in the world. With the advent of networking tools and search it has become easier to span those six degrees of separation and the ability to connect is now just a couple of mouse clicks away.

In India social networking might evolve differently when compared to the USA or other countries. But, before delving deeper into how social networking will evolve in India let us look at what is social networking.

What is Social Networking? Social network is defined as “a social structure made of nodes (which are generally individuals or organizations) that are tied by one or more specific types of relations, such as values, visions, idea, financial exchange, friends, kinship, dislike, conflict, trade, web links, sexual relations, disease transmission (epidemiology), or airline routes.” (Wikipedia)

This social networking concept spread to the computer world in the 1970s when researchers envisioned people connecting and interacting via computers. So in the pre-Mosaic and pre-Netscape days of the197s to mid-1990s you had Usenet groups for various interests. For instance, soc.culture.indian was a Usenet group where many Indian students in the USA got their questions answered about travel, graduate programs or connecting with their classmates. Out of soc.culture.indian grew various Usenet groups for different Indian states and languages.

During the dotcom boom you had social networking groups like sixdegrees.com, classmates.com , epinion, and others. What was different about these groups was an instant ability to browse and search through archives in an easy way. Then in early 2002 a new avatar of social networking took off in a big way with the launch of Friendster, Orkut, MySpace, Facebook and Linkedin among others. What these sites have in common is a rich (including multimedia) feature set that allows for sharing information easily and some sites allow for integration of third-party widgets and applications. So, social networking in its different avatars has been around in the USA for over 30 years (if you factor in the Usenet groups.)

Viral Marketing India:
In India social networking is a relatively new concept due to obvious reasons: low penetration of PCs and laptops and patchy broadband connections. What that means is that while people were aware of these social networking groups and applications they had limited means to access them. However in the last four years the social networking landscape has changed quite a bit in India. In a relatively short period of time certain social networking sites like Orkut and Fropper appear to have taken off, and new ones like Linkedin and Facebook are beginning to find traction among Indian users. What is driving this traction is still unclear. Is it the novelty of being able to network with people? Or, is there a genuine interest driving this adoption?

PostHeaderIcon US Search Engine Rankings April 2008 by comScore

comScore, Inc. (Nasdaq: SCOR), a leader in measuring the digital world, today released an overview of Internet usage in Latin America, a region that is home to nearly 62 million of the 850 million worldwide Internet users (age 15 and older at home and work locations), as measured by the comScore World Metrix audience measurement service.

In April, Brazil had the largest Internet audience in Latin America with more than 19 million Internet users. Brazilians also exhibited heavy engagement, with the average Internet user spending 30.2 hours online during the month, substantially higher than the Latin American (28.6 hours) and worldwide (25.7 hours) averages. Argentina (32.4 hours) and Venezuela (31.5 hours) also exhibited heavy engagement. Despite their heavy engagement while online, Latin Americans are less frequent Internet users, with most countries falling below the worldwide average for usage days per month.
