Gujarat stats ranked first among all Indian states.
Not a month goes without news reports highlighting the achievement and development of Gujarat. Reports on the recent developments evince that Gujarat is a “happening state” which entitles it to be ranked first among all Indian states.
Agriculture scientist M S Swaminathan rightly puts it, “Gujarat owes it to a scientific and integrated approach to agriculture during Narendra Modi’s tenure which is backed by a sharp vision.”
The initiative of Modi government to provide soil health cards to farmers has brought second ‘Green Revolution’ in Gujarat. The state has now changed gears to become an auto hub. After Tata, Hero Honda, the world’s largest two-wheeler maker, is set to establish a manufacturing unit in the state.
Gujarat has highly diversified industries — from diamonds to denim, fertilisers to pharmaceuticals, automobile to milk products, cotton, art-silk, ceramics and oil seeds. Most of these industries have notched up top slots in terms of production — in India and world alike.
Gujarat contributes to 40 per cent of the country’s pharma and art-silk industries, 80 per cent of polished diamond industry and 11 per cent of the world’s chemical exports. The state government has formed a land bank of 50,000 hectares for industrial houses to choose the sites online.
|
For past 12 years, Gujarat’s GDP (Gross Domestic Product) has been growing at 12 per cent — as fast as China’s. Gujaratis, who hold 30 per cent of scrips floating in the market, account for 16 per cent of Indian exports and 17 per cent of GDP. The state is India’s petro-gas capital. Political stability, entrepreneurial spirit and ever-improving infra-structure attract capital and entrepreneurs from East Asia, the West and even from the Middle East. Country’s largest social base of business class of Banias, Parsis, Khojas, Bohras constitutes Gujarat’s business community. A commercially-tuned culture and Modi’s resourceful leadership have made Gujarat the most “fast forward state of India”.

Though critical issues like unemployment, low indicators of social development (HDI) and population living Below Poverty Line (BPL) cannot be overlooked, it was persistent under all regimes.
Modi and Health Minister J N Vyas have floated several credible schemes to improve the state’s performance on HDI. The state government has also earmarked financial aid of Rs 1,500 crore for 25 lakh poor families which will be delivered by 2010. While 1.43 BPL families will get plots to build houses, about 2.59 lakh families will be given houses before May 2011. Modi government aims at providing jobs to 10 lakh youths, water supply to 12,000 villages and electricity to 17,940 villages. Also, the government departments will be graded according to their performance in achieving the goal. The state has sanctioned Rs 1,000 crore for Sakhi Mandals to micro-finance thousands of women. Gujarat has bagged several prestigious awards like UN Sasakawa Award for disaster mitigation, CAPAM award for innovation in governance, UNESCO award, CSI award for e-governance and Indiatech award in power sector. The state is front-runner in attracting industrial investment (MoUs). It is first in implementing major health care services. Besides, availability and utility of infrastructure and state-wide fibre-optic connectivity puts it on world map. Gujarat’s synergising relationship with its Diaspora demonstrates what Gujarat has achieved under the Modi government. Clinton Foundation has awarded Gujarat the world’s largest solar plant and 34 solar projects are in the pipeline. The state has the distinction of housing India’s first tidal energy project and the largest wind energy farm. Ahmedabad has a world class public transport system which serves 44 million people and helps in saving 37 lakh tonnes of carbon emission. The state has country’s biggest CNG and LNG infrastructure. Ahmedabad, which was derided as the most polluted city in 2003, was recognised as ‘Green City’ by the UN in 2009. But, Mahuva-pattern land satyagrahas alert us against the possibility of Gujarat becoming a mosaic of fragments of SEZ sub-states. All these have sculpted Gujarat’s image as a geo-economic power. New coastal ‘Silver Corridor’ with the development arc between its two gulfs and knowledge corridor has wooed global players. Asian Tigers seek access to its ports for taking goods to the Middle East and Europe. Japanese township near Dholera and Koreans’ near Valsad has raised the state’s international profile. Gujaratis ask: “Miles to go, but compared to other states isn’t our glass more than half full?”

45 Million Internet Users in India
India had as on September 2008 45.3 million active internet users. This is according to the I-Cube [Internet in India] Study released today and conducted annually by IMRB International and Internet and Mobile Association of India [IAMAI]. Active internet users are those who have used the internet at least once in the last one month – this is an internationally accepted benchmark for enumerating internet users.
Urban users continue to dominate internet use contributing to 42 million of the 45 million odd users. In September last 2007, the number of active internet users in urban India was 36 million showing a year on year growth of less than 13 per cent. Commenting on the study Dr Subho Ray, president, IAMAI, said, “the growth rate was alarming compared with the rest in past years as well as with some other countries notably v where the number of internet users are more than 250 million”
The study also found that the number of “claimed” internet users in September 2008 was 57 million compared with 48 million in September 2007, recording a less than 10 per cent growth. Claimed users are those who have used the internet sometime but not in the last one month.
The time series data since 2001 captures this definite slow down in the growth rate of internet users in India.

The proportion of internet users to the total population above the age of 12 and proportion of internet users to the total literate population is also not very encouraging as shown in the tables below.

The survey also interviewed the claimed users on the lack of internet user and found there are five main barriers to internet use in urban India. The main reason for lack of internet use was found to be lack of awareness of the use of the medium.

Commenting on the study Mr. Mohan Krishnan, Senior Vice President BIRD, a specialized unit of IMRB International said “Continuing niche growth of the Internet is forcing two major realisations that need to be acted upon. Firstly, with majority of urban literates challenged due to the barrier of English language, there needs to be a strong push in vernacular/local language provision over the Internet. In these markets, in addition to localised content, online applications that matter individuals in their daily lives are needed. At the same time, untouched vast rural markets need to be tapped. However, enabling content for such markets highly depends on
The urban survey was conducted in the following cities

IIM Student’s Case Study on Rambhai Tea Maker (Chaiwala)
A humble chaiwala who inspired a website has been honoured with a case study at IIM-A on his business that has all the ingredients that go into a successful venture.
For the past 25 years, Ram Attar Kori has been selling student favourites such as tea, biscuits, egg bhujiya, buns, paan and cigarettes on the footpath outside the campus of the premier business school which has recognised him by “opening” a window through the border wall which allows easier access.
Today, Rambhai, 51, was in the classroom as an “observer”, listening to three management experts who presented a case study on his business model, which, as one of them said, was a humbling lesson on the untold success stories that abound on India’s dusty and bustling streets.
He keenly listened to the discussion on the case study presented by the three: Umesh Neelakantan of the DCMAT School of Media and Business, Kerala, Jaspreet Ahluwalia, assistant professor at the Centre for Management Training and Research, Mohali, and Sonal Katewa, assistant professor, Asia Pacific Institute of Management, Jaipur.
The trio are part of a batch of 38 business management teachers who are doing a faculty development programme at IIM.
“The reason why we chose Rambhai as our case study is that we noticed he had a huge clientele among the students. We learnt that he has been doing business at the same place for the last 25 years. As we have to do a case study as a part of our curriculum, we decided that instead of going to any corporate house, why not study this man who has blended various principles of management without undergoing any formal management training,” said Katewa.
Language was no barrier as Rambhai listened to the presentation on him and his business model.
“I was not supposed to say anything as I was there as a guest and observer,” said the man who had turned out for his big moment shorn of his patent stubble and smartly attired in a new olive green shirt and cream trousers.
Much like Pramod-da of Calcutta’s Presidency College and Arun-da of St Xavier’s, who has “retired”, Rambhai is a legend on campus. He has even inspired a website www.rambhai.com, which is a platform for free exchange of views, similar to the kiosk he runs where many ideas have been born.
The son of an agriculture labourer from Faizabad in Uttar Pradesh, Rambhai came to Ahmedabad at the age of four. After doing odd jobs, he started his teashop in the early eighties and has not looked back since.
And like any savvy entrepreneur, he isn’t willing to let out the numbers. “Let me say that I earn well enough to look after my needy relatives and educate my 20-year-old daughter, a student of fine arts at CN Vidyalaya,” he said, adding that the IIM experts had promised to help him expand his business. But students say his daily sale would be “at least” Rs 2,000.
Neelakantan said the rationale for doing a case study on the man was to show that “even an institute like IIM-A can learn a lesson from a street vendor”.
“Generally, street vendors are perceived to be tough and ill- mannered guys, but here is a man who is simple, loveable, light-hearted and yet has been successfully doing business outside an elite institute, stationing himself in one place for the last 25 years and maintaining a long-term customer relationship,” said Neelakantan.
Ahluwalia pointed out that even without formal management training, Rambhai was “practically executing all management principles”.
“Like every entrepreneur, he first saw an opportunity to start his own business outside the IIM-A campus, developed a strategy and maintained a system which ensured he got repeat customers,” said Ahluwalia.
Katewa said Rambhai mastered the concept of good customer relations: a popular management concept considered a cornerstone of success for any consumer product. “He has been observing customers. He realised the importance of location, right outside the IIM-A gate,” said Katewa.
