American Airlines sues Yahoo over search terms
American Airlines is suing Yahoo Inc. for trademark infringement, a case similar to one that the nation’s largest airline settled this summer against Google Inc.
The airline complains that when computer users enter American’s trademark terms such as AAdvantage, the name of its frequent-flier program, in a search they can be directed to competitors who pay Yahoo for the traffic.
American filed its lawsuit last week in U.S. District court in Fort Worth for unspecified damages, legal costs and money to run a “corrective” advertising campaign.
Kelley Benander of Yahoo said, “We have confidence in our trademark policies and are prepared to defend them in court.”
Yahoo’s policy allows advertisers to use the trademark terms of others only if it refers to the trademark “without creating a likelihood of consumer confusion.”
American, a unit of Fort Worth-based AMR Corp., reached a confidential settlement of a similar lawsuit against Google this summer, also in federal court in Fort Worth.
Each side agreed to pay its own legal fees, and American got nothing from Google. But Google searches for “American Airlines” or “AAdvantage” no longer produce paid ads along the right side of the portal screen.
Google had prevailed in previous lawsuits filed by other companies over their paid search advertising practices using trademark terms.
Tim Smith, a spokesman for American, said Tuesday that the airline is suing Yahoo to protect its intellectual property and prevent confusion among consumers and the diversion of shoppers looking for American’s products.
Smith said the dispute centers on Yahoo’s practice of selling American’s trademark terms to other companies for use in Internet searches. He said the airline saw value in Internet searches and hoped to continue a “professional and amicable relationship” with Yahoo.

UK search marketing spend ‘to reach £330m in 2008′
British organisations will spend £2.75 billion on search engine marketing (SEM) activities this year, according to a new publication.
This represents an increase of 24 per cent compared with last year, E-consultancy’s Search Engine Marketing Buyer’s Guide said, according to Precision Marketing.
Breaking this down, the report said that search engine optimisation spending will rise 32 per cent to reach £330 million by the end of 2006, while pay-per-click expenditure will see growth of 23 per cent to hit £2.24 billion.
Despite this double-digit growth, it is not as high as the increases recorded in previous years, something that may be attributable to the slowing economy, E-consultancy editor-in-chief Chris Lake remarked.
However, he added: “Consumer internet usage is flattening out, but the sector is certainly more robust than other media channels that have a less measurable return on investment and should continue to grow for years to come.”
Mark Jackson of Search Engine Watch recently commented that the level of spending going to organic and paid search appears to be somewhat disproportionate considering research suggesting that up to 70 per cent of all search engine click-throughs occur in organic listings.

Video Marketing - Video Search Engine Optimization
People usually love video, millions of Americans consume videos online and same is the case world over. A consumer is most likely to keep in mind and refer to a video in comparison to a print advertisement. These days video making is very economical as compared to the cost of a traditional commercial. Broadband is getting enormous popularity worldwide. Now people can watch videos without long download times or quality issues. Present generation considers video to be a reliable source of news and information. Online video for them is second to nature. Here are a few tips/hints for optimizing your video:
1) It is recommended that you create and submit a transcript for users and the search engines, add a transcript to each video file you’ve uploaded via your Video Status page. Create a Keyword Rich Title for your Transcript; include a brief introductory paragraph/synopsis that describes the subject matter of your transcript (and video) and be sure to publish your transcript.
2) Keep in mind that when users search for videos on search engines, often time they use the word “video” in their search. For example, “car racing video.” Therefore, in addition to the keywords that you are targeting, also be sure to include the word “video” or “videos” in your description, text, title, meta data, etc…
3) Just as with normal techniques for SEO, it is just as important that you develop links to your video for off-page search engine optimization. Try to get as many quality links to your video as possible. Perhaps submit to social bookmarking sites and friend’s blogs.
4) Create a video sitemap exclusively for your online video content so that engines can find all of your videos and understand the structure of your site more easily. This helps the web crawlers to locate your video files speedily and effortlessly.
5) It is very difficult for the web crawlers of any search engine to crawl into the video contents inside flash players so they usually prefer to stay away from such files. It is therefore advisable not to use such kind of file formats which discourages the web crawlers.
6) Create search engine friendly keyword URLs for your video pages. To do this, you can use mod-rewrite function or htaccess file so that the URLs are freely assessable and readable by the search engines.
7) The first thing that users see when browsing for or searching for videos is the video thumbnail. Research shows that the thumbnail you choose for your video can really effect the number of viewers that watch the video itself. Try to experiment with the thumbnails that you choose to see which ones create more interest and get seen more often by viewers.
Try to keep one video per page and put all video pages into the same directory or folder.
Besides the tips mentioned above for Video SEO, there are a few other guidelines to keep in mind:
9) Always make sure viewers are searching for your targeted keywords regularly. If not, try to find the closest related keywords being searched.
10) Allow users to submit comments and feedback on your videos. Studies show that viewers who offer feedback are those most likely to convert and take the desired action that you are trying to solicit, whether it be an email, website visit, or purchase.

Facebook Hits 100 Million Users
Fast growing social network Facebook has hit the 100 million users mark, according to a statement today by Dave Morin, the company’s Senior Platform Manager.
How does that compare to MySpace’s ascent? A guy named Rick appears to have become MySpace’s 100 millionth registered user in 2006. MySpace took 3 years after launch to hit that magic number; for Facebook it took 4 years and 6 months.
Drama
The first years of MySpace were characterized by music and spam, while Facebook’s beginnings were in college parties and drama. That drama continues today. For example, the company reports that only 20% of its 100 million users have visited the dramatically redesigned version of the site by clicking on a button at the top of their screen in recent weeks. Facebook users don’t like change.
The company wants to spin the 20% number as a positive embrace of the changes (and the ordinarily fabulous Eric Eldon at Venture Beat buys that spin for some reason) but in fact it fits in the history of conflict between Facebook and its users.
Innovation and Monetization
None the less, the site is growing by leaps and bounds. 100 million registered users probably includes a substantial number of regularly active users. Now if only the company could figure out how to monetize those numbers as well as they’d like.
We believe they will probably figure it out. More interesting to us is watching Facebook develop its feature set, leading then falling behind in innovation. 100 million registered users is a lot of people to innovate with.
Unfortunately for Facebook, sometimes it seems that those people are not interested in innovation or monetization - they just want to communicate with each other. I guess when you call yourself a “utility” some people expect you to remain unexciting.

Open Source - New way of Cloud Computing
In a world that is becoming increasingly, seamlessly integrated and focused on collaborative working, Cloud Computing is a natural corollary. Industry has been talking about Cloud Computing being the next big wave in Open Source since 2003. However, Cloud Computing, an approach to shared infrastructure where large pools of systems are linked together to provide IT services, is now on the fast track.
And, companies are excited because Cloud Computing will allow corporate data centers to operate more like the Internet by enabling computing across a distributed, globally accessible fabric of resources, rather than on local machines or remote server systems. Organizations will be able to use these as much as they want and as wireless broadband connection options grow, wherever they need them.
Cloud Computing comprises a platform which dynamically provisions and configures servers as needed. Cloud applications are extended to be accessible through the Internet, using large data centers and powerful servers that host Web applications and Web services. Large corporates have started working on these aspects of the new and emerging open source with great zeal.
The idea of cloud computing models is expanding rapidly as the route to cost reduction and improving IT flexibility. By reducing expenses and labour associated with deploying, maintaining and upgrading business technology, IT departments can focus their limited resources on more strategic projects.
Also, the Business Web that was until now a static destination where one merely published and searched for information has evolved into a set of dynamic virtual workplaces where people create and share information in a flexible, easily accessible and constantly maturing way. This paradigm shift in the Internet is allowing applications to be developed in the cloud.
Again, since software is in the cloud, it can be constantly worked upon without any inconvenience to anyone and help technology keep pace with the dynamic web world, giving employees access to new technology without waiting for it to hit the market. Thus corporates are putting out projects for students to do research and make improvements on softwares. Companies such as IBM and Google are already working on Cloud Computing while others like Yahoo, Microsoft, Wipro, eBay and Salesforce.com are following suit.
But there are security risks that come with the use of cloud computing. They include problems related to compliance, availability, and data integrity. Limiting the use of cloud technology is a subtle issue that companies have to examine closely, measuring the risk against when and where cloud computing can be effectively deployed.
One big challenge for future development and innovations in Cloud Computing is the ability of the industry to get skilled persons. In fact the industry needs to develop skills in a number of new areas to release the potential of various possibilities that e-Science offers.
The advantages, however far outweigh the challenges and risks and therefore the industry is forging ahead with a number of exciting projects to get the best advantages possible from Cloud Computing. And, we might well see the clouds on cloud computing clearing out sooner than later.

Social Networking & Viral Marketing in India
In today’s context social networking is about connecting with people at a low cost with existing devices and technology. Until a few years ago it used to be that you had six degrees of separation to connect with anybody in the world. With the advent of networking tools and search it has become easier to span those six degrees of separation and the ability to connect is now just a couple of mouse clicks away.
In India social networking might evolve differently when compared to the USA or other countries. But, before delving deeper into how social networking will evolve in India let us look at what is social networking.
What is Social Networking? Social network is defined as “a social structure made of nodes (which are generally individuals or organizations) that are tied by one or more specific types of relations, such as values, visions, idea, financial exchange, friends, kinship, dislike, conflict, trade, web links, sexual relations, disease transmission (epidemiology), or airline routes.” (Wikipedia)
This social networking concept spread to the computer world in the 1970s when researchers envisioned people connecting and interacting via computers. So in the pre-Mosaic and pre-Netscape days of the197s to mid-1990s you had Usenet groups for various interests. For instance, soc.culture.indian was a Usenet group where many Indian students in the USA got their questions answered about travel, graduate programs or connecting with their classmates. Out of soc.culture.indian grew various Usenet groups for different Indian states and languages.
During the dotcom boom you had social networking groups like sixdegrees.com, classmates.com , epinion, and others. What was different about these groups was an instant ability to browse and search through archives in an easy way. Then in early 2002 a new avatar of social networking took off in a big way with the launch of Friendster, Orkut, MySpace, Facebook and Linkedin among others. What these sites have in common is a rich (including multimedia) feature set that allows for sharing information easily and some sites allow for integration of third-party widgets and applications. So, social networking in its different avatars has been around in the USA for over 30 years (if you factor in the Usenet groups.)
Viral Marketing India:
In India social networking is a relatively new concept due to obvious reasons: low penetration of PCs and laptops and patchy broadband connections. What that means is that while people were aware of these social networking groups and applications they had limited means to access them. However in the last four years the social networking landscape has changed quite a bit in India. In a relatively short period of time certain social networking sites like Orkut and Fropper appear to have taken off, and new ones like Linkedin and Facebook are beginning to find traction among Indian users. What is driving this traction is still unclear. Is it the novelty of being able to network with people? Or, is there a genuine interest driving this adoption?

Google Knol - Online Knowledge Sharing
A few months ago we announced that Google testing a new product called “Google Knol”. Knols are authoritative articles about specific topics, written by people who know about those subjects. Today, they making Knol available to everyone.
The web contains vast amounts of information, but not everything worth knowing is on the web. An enormous amount of information resides in people’s heads: millions of people know useful things and billions more could benefit from that knowledge. Knol will encourage these people to contribute their knowledge online and make it accessible to everyone.
The key principle behind Knol is authorship. Every knol will have an author (or group of authors) who put their name behind their content. It’s their knol, their voice, their opinion. We expect that there will be multiple knols on the same subject, and we think that is good.
With Knol, Google introducing a new method for authors to work together that call “moderated collaboration.” With this feature, any reader can make suggested edits to a knol which the author may then choose to accept, reject, or modify before these contributions become visible to the public. This allows authors to accept suggestions from everyone in the world while remaining in control of their content. After all, their name is associated with it!
Knols include strong community tools which allow for many modes of interaction between readers and authors. People can submit comments, rate, or write a review of a knol. At the discretion of the author, a knol may include ads from our AdSense program. If an author chooses to include ads, Google will provide the author with a revenue share from the proceeds of those ad placements.
Google happy to announce an agreement with the New Yorker magazine which allows any author to add one cartoon per knol from the New Yorker’s extensive cartoon repository. Cartoons are an effective (and fun) way to make your point, even on the most serious topics.
Everyone knows something. See what people are writing about, then tell the world what you know: knol.google.com

Top Guinness Book of Records 2008 for Internet & Online Web
I have read Guinness Book of Recods, The section on “Internet” only got 2 pages and wasn’t even that surprising. Most of the stories there aren’t new except for a few…
* Paris Hilton and Orlando Bloom took the top spots for the most popular online news searches in 2006 but the most popular terms was “Bebo”, the social networking site akin to Facebook.
* Largest video sharing service is Youtube with 6.1 million uploaded videos, 45 terabytes of data. Ghyslain Raza’s “The Starwars Kid” clip is the most popular ever with an estimated combined 900 Million views, followed by Gary Brolsma dancing to the tune of Numa Numa (Dragostea din tei) with 700 Million views.
* NTT Docomo’s I-Mode of Japan is the largest Wireless Internet Provider with 45,687,117 subscribers by the end of January 2006. Interestingly, Smart now also offers the I-Mode to select Nokia phone models.

* Blogger Kyle MacDonald holds the record for the most successful internet trade — that’s after he got a house at Kipling, Saskatchewan, Canada in exchange for his red paper clip in 2006.
The largest prize won for an “online bingo” was for $283,099 by Jo Collins in the UK back in April 2006. So, the next time you get an email to join an online bingo, think twice before hitting the “Spam” button. You might be in luck and land an entry in the Guiness Book of World Records.
