Google Suggest Tool Goes Live
Google expects to ‘graduate’ a feature from its labs to its main search page in the next week aimed to help users execute faster and more specific searches.
The feature, called Google Suggest, automatically recommends options for the rest of your search term as you type based on the most popular searches.
Google Suggest, which is similar to services offered by Yahoo and the recently launched Cuil, was announced on Monday on GoogleBlog: “The Google Suggest feature originally started as a 20 percent project in 2004, and has since expanded to Google Labs, Toolbar, Firefox search box, Maps and Web Search for select countries, the iPhone and BlackBerry, YouTube, and now Google.com. ”
Google touts the service, which is available on the Google website for a test drive, as being able to helping to formulate queries, reduce spelling errors, and saving users keystrokes.
Top 30 Skills Every IT Person Needs
An IT manager’s guide on how to be better at what you do, no matter how experienced you are.
1. Be able to fix basic PC issues. These can be how to map a printer, back up files, or add a network card. You don’t need to be an expert and understand how to overclock a CPU or hack the registry, but if you work in IT, people expect you to be able to do some things.
2. Work the help desk. Everyone, from the CIO to the senior architect, should be able to sit down at the help desk and answer the phones. Not only will you gain a new appreciation for the folks on the phones, but you will also teach them more about your process and avoid escalations in the future.
3. Do public speaking. At least once, you should present a topic to your peers. It can be as simple as a five-minute tutorial on how IM works, but being able to explain something and being comfortable enough to talk in front of a crowd is a skill you need to have. If you are nervous, partner with someone who is good at it, or do a roundtable. This way, if you get flustered, someone is there to cover for you.
4. Train someone. The best way to learn is to teach.
5. Listen more than you speak. I very rarely say something I didn’t already know, but I often hear other people say things and think, “Darn, I wish I knew that last week.”
6. Know basic networking. Whether you are a network engineer, a help desk technician, a business analyst, or a system administrator, you need to understand how networks work and simple troubleshooting. You should understand DNS and how to check it, as well as how to ping and trace-route machines.
7. Know basic system administration. Understand file permissions, access levels, and why machines talk to the domain controllers. You don’t need to be an expert, but knowing the basics will avoid many headaches down the road.
8. Know how to take a network trace. Everyone in IT should be able to fire up wireshark, netmon, snoop, or some basic network capturing tool. You don’t need to understand everything in it, but you should be able to capture it to send to a network engineer to examine.
9. Know the difference between latency and bandwidth. Latency is the amount of time to get a packet back and forth; bandwidth is the maximum amount of data a link can carry. They are related, but different. A link with high-bandwidth utilization can cause latency to go higher, but if the link isn’t full, adding more bandwidth can’t reduce latency.
10. Script. Everyone should be able to throw a script together to get quick results. That doesn’t mean you’re a programmer. Real programmers put in error messages, look for abnormal behavior, and document. You don’t need to do that, but you should be able to put something together to remove lines, send e-mail, or copy files.
11. Back up. Before you do anything, for your own sake, back it up.
12. Test backups. If you haven’t tested restoring it, it isn’t really there. Trust me.
13. Document. None of the rest of us wants to have to figure out what you did. Write it down and put it in a location everyone can find. Even if it’s obvious what you did or why you did it, write it down.
14. Read “The Cuckoo’s Egg.” I don’t get a cut from Cliff Stoll (the author), but this is probably the best security book there is — not because it is so technical, but because it isn’t.
15. Work all night on a team project. No one likes to do this, but it’s part of IT. Working through a hell project that requires an all-nighter to resolve stinks, but it builds very useful camaraderie by the time it is done.
16. Run cable. It looks easy, but it isn’t. Plus, you will understand why installing a new server doesn’t really take five minutes — unless, of course, you just plug in both ends and let the cable fall all over the place. Don’t do that — do it right. Label all the cables (yes, both ends), and dress them nice and neat. This will save time when there’s a problem because you’ll be able to see what goes where.
17. You should know some energy rules of thumb. For example: A device consuming 3.5kW of electricity requires a ton of cooling to compensate for the heat. And I really do mean a ton, not merely “a lot.” Note that 3.5kW is roughly what 15 to 20 fairly new 1U and 2U servers consume. One ton of cooling requires three 10-inch-round ducts to handle the air; 30 tons of air requires a duct measuring 80 by 20 inches. Thirty tons of air is a considerable amount.
18. Manage at least one project. This way, the next time the project manager asks you for a status, you’ll understand why. Ideally, you will have already sent the status report because you knew it would be asked for.
19. Understand operating costs versus capital projects. Operating costs are the costs to run the business. Capital equipment is made of assets that can have their cost spread over a time period — say, 36 months. Operating costs are sometimes better, sometimes worse. Know which one is better — it can make a difference between a yes and no.
20. Learn the business processes. Being able to spot improvements in the way the business is run is a great technique for gaining points. You don’t need to use fancy tools; just asking a few questions and using common sense will serve you well.
21. Don’t be afraid to debate something you know is wrong. But also know when to stop arguing. It’s a fine line between having a good idea and being a pain in the ass.
22. If you have to go to your boss with a problem, make sure you have at least one solution.
23. There is no such thing as a dumb question, so ask it … once. Then write down the answer so that you don’t have to ask it again. If you ask the same person the same question more than twice, you’re an idiot (in their eyes).
24. Even if it takes you twice as long to figure something out on your own versus asking someone else, take the time to do it yourself. You’ll remember it longer. If it takes more than twice as long, ask.
25. Learn how to speak without using acronyms.
26. IT managers: Listen to your people. They know more than you. If not, get rid of them and hire smarter people. If you think you are the smartest one, resign.
27. IT managers: If you know the answer, ask the right questions for someone else to get the solution; don’t just give the answer. This is hard when you know what will bring the system back up quickly and everyone in the company is waiting for it, but it will pay off in the long run. After all, you won’t always be available.
28. IT managers: The first time someone does something wrong, it’s not a mistake — it’s a learning experience. The next time, though, give them hell. And remember: Every day is a chance for an employee to learn something else. Make sure they learn something valuable versus learning there’s a better job out there.
29. IT managers: Always give people more work than you think they can handle. People will say you are unrealistic, but everyone needs something to complain about anyway, so make it easy. Plus, there’s nothing worse than looking at the clock at 2 p.m. and thinking, “I’ve got nothing to do, but can’t leave.” This way, your employees won’t have that dilemma.
30. IT managers: Square pegs go in square holes. If someone works well in a team but not so effectively on their own, keep them as part of a team.

Effects of Software and Internet Piracy
What is software piracy?
There are several kinds of software piracy. The bottom line is when software is pirated, the developer does not receive compensation for their work.
Effects of Software Piracy
When software is pirated, consumers, software developers, and resellers are harmed. Software piracy increases the risk consumer’s computers will be corrupted by defective software and infected with viruses. Those who provide defective and illegal software do not tend to provide sales and technical support. Pirated software usually has inadequate documentation, which prevents consumers from enjoying the full benefits of the software package. In addition, consumers are unable to take advantage of technical support and product upgrades, which are typically available to legitimate registered users of the software. Pirated software can cost consumers lost time and more money.
Developers lose revenue from pirated software, from current products as well as from future programs. When software is sold most developers invest a portion of the revenue into future development and better software packages. When software is pirated, software developers lose revenue from the sale of their products, which hinders development of new software and stifles the growth of the software company.
Kinds of Piracy
End User Piracy -
Using multiple copies of a single software package on several different systems or distributing registered or licensed copies of software to others. Another common form of end user piracy is when a cracked version of the software is used. Hacking into the software and disabling the copy protection, or illegally generating key codes that unlocks the trial version making the software a registered version creates a cracked version.
Reseller Piracy -
Reseller piracy occurs when an unscrupulous reseller distributes multiple copies of a single software package to different customers; this includes preloading systems with software without providing original manuals & diskettes. Reseller piracy also occurs when resellers knowingly sell counterfeit versions of software to unsuspecting customers.
Indications of reseller piracy are multiple users with the same serial number, lack of original documentation or an incomplete set, and non-matching documentation.
Trademark/Trade Name Infringement
Infringement occurs when an individual or dealer claims to be authorized either as a technician, support provider or reseller, or is improperly using a trademark or trade name.
BBS/Internet Piracy –
BBS/ Internet Piracy occurs when there is an electronic transfer of copyrighted software. If system operators and/or users upload or download copyrighted software and materials onto or from bulletin boards or the Internet for others to copy and use without the proper license. Often hackers will distribute or sell the hacked software or cracked keys. The developer does not receive any money for the software the hacker distributed. This is an infringement on the developer’s copyright.
Another technique used by software pirates is to illegally obtain a registered copy of software. Pirates purchase the software once and use it on multiple computers. Purchasing software with a stolen credit card is another form of software piracy. Unfortunately there are many kinds of software piracy that has hampered the software industry.
These types of software piracy have hampered the software industry. For the software industry to prosper and further develop useful software for consumers please support and pay for software. This results in better software for all.
Open Source - New way of Cloud Computing
In a world that is becoming increasingly, seamlessly integrated and focused on collaborative working, Cloud Computing is a natural corollary. Industry has been talking about Cloud Computing being the next big wave in Open Source since 2003. However, Cloud Computing, an approach to shared infrastructure where large pools of systems are linked together to provide IT services, is now on the fast track.
And, companies are excited because Cloud Computing will allow corporate data centers to operate more like the Internet by enabling computing across a distributed, globally accessible fabric of resources, rather than on local machines or remote server systems. Organizations will be able to use these as much as they want and as wireless broadband connection options grow, wherever they need them.
Cloud Computing comprises a platform which dynamically provisions and configures servers as needed. Cloud applications are extended to be accessible through the Internet, using large data centers and powerful servers that host Web applications and Web services. Large corporates have started working on these aspects of the new and emerging open source with great zeal.
The idea of cloud computing models is expanding rapidly as the route to cost reduction and improving IT flexibility. By reducing expenses and labour associated with deploying, maintaining and upgrading business technology, IT departments can focus their limited resources on more strategic projects.
Also, the Business Web that was until now a static destination where one merely published and searched for information has evolved into a set of dynamic virtual workplaces where people create and share information in a flexible, easily accessible and constantly maturing way. This paradigm shift in the Internet is allowing applications to be developed in the cloud.
Again, since software is in the cloud, it can be constantly worked upon without any inconvenience to anyone and help technology keep pace with the dynamic web world, giving employees access to new technology without waiting for it to hit the market. Thus corporates are putting out projects for students to do research and make improvements on softwares. Companies such as IBM and Google are already working on Cloud Computing while others like Yahoo, Microsoft, Wipro, eBay and Salesforce.com are following suit.
But there are security risks that come with the use of cloud computing. They include problems related to compliance, availability, and data integrity. Limiting the use of cloud technology is a subtle issue that companies have to examine closely, measuring the risk against when and where cloud computing can be effectively deployed.
One big challenge for future development and innovations in Cloud Computing is the ability of the industry to get skilled persons. In fact the industry needs to develop skills in a number of new areas to release the potential of various possibilities that e-Science offers.
The advantages, however far outweigh the challenges and risks and therefore the industry is forging ahead with a number of exciting projects to get the best advantages possible from Cloud Computing. And, we might well see the clouds on cloud computing clearing out sooner than later.

Indian Online Advertising Industry - Challenges
Online Advertising seems to be the buzzword in the Advertising Industry these days. It is exciting for all of us in the Internet AD world to note that our media, which is still less than 3% of the total Media bought, receives over 50% of the voice share by the Industry gurus and the press. This attention is largely fuelled by the almost 100% year-on-year growth of this medium and the various industry reports suggesting that 80% of all media bought by 2020 would be digital media.
The proof that Internet Advertising works comes from the excellent growth registered by the early adopters such as the jobs, finance, travel & matrimony businesses. These are the businesses who trusted Internet with a large share of their AD budgets and they are the one’s who have to stood to gain returns.
As much as the small success of the Internet Media excites us, what remains a concern is whether we are ready to face the rude challenges thrown up to this industry.
The Challenges…
Adoption of The Medium
With so much of hype around the medium the bitter truth still remains that only 20% of the advertisers have adopted the medium. The biggest challenge today is that Internet is increasingly getting branded as a ROI medium. A few doubts still remain in the minds of the marketers and they doubt whether this should be the medium of choice when it comes to ROI.
There is no problem with seeing the internet as a ROI medium but is approach to the measure of ROI correct. What needs to be corrected is that marketers need to consider Internet advertising as a tool beyond the lead generator. It is high time that we used the more advanced AD Matrix to measure ROI’s on Internet. The Internet might be at the early stage of e-commerce but it is for sure the most preferred & high engagement medium when it comes to influencing one’s perception about a brand or a purchase decision. But, how many (I am sure not many…..) marketers are really using the right Matrix to calculate the ROI.
Check out the success of the I-Coke platform in China – a community of 20 million users and still growing- and the Adidas worldwide platform. When you consider these examples, you will put aside all inhibitions about the possibility of successfully building Brands and Communities on Internet. I am sure these were campaigns launched with goals that beyond CPC, CPL & CPA!
Marketers just need to be more innovative & evolved with the quarterly sales targets not being the “be all and end all” of it.
Critical Mass
It is very disheartening for me when a client says, “well I like everything that Internet can do for me. But you know I am a mass brand and the reach of Internet in India today is not exciting enough for me to put serious time and money behind it”.
Whether the Internet in India has already achieved the critical mass or not is ofcourse, a very subjective and debatable topic. There is still huge growth potential for both the increase of user base and quality inventory. Many more local ideas are available to create compelling content to fuel the growth of Internet in India. It is true that not every business created on the Internet will have the potential to come out with an IPO. But as long as it is an idea with some value for an Internet user, trust me you will be able to run a decently profitable business. We need more entrepreneurs who can fill the huge gap of quality inventory vs demand.
Infrastructure
Whether it is the Internet or the Mobile, bandwidth continues to remain the big roadblock to unleashing the true potential of the medium. Most innovative advertising solutions are bandwidth hungry and to a large extent the growth of broadband and internet advertising are directly proportional. We are all waiting for 3G to make our mobile phones the true convergence device and suddenly we would add up 130 million users. Advertising on the Mobile is going to be big and would give an immediate upside to Online Advertising. Internet advertising agencies will have to gear up to service the needs to Mobile advertising as a lot of Internet Advertising is going to converge with the hand held device.
People
The average age of executives in India’s Internet AD agencies is between 26-27 years. Why are the traditional advertising guys who know so much about Advertising shy of choosing the Internet? Why is it that not many creative gurus of the leading advertising agencies are willing to do Online Advertising? They all believe that Digital is the future yet they are not adopting it. Is it that they are unwilling to learn Online or the clients are willing to invest almost nothing on the Online Creatives. The same guy who spends almost Rs. 25 lakhs on a TV commercial finds if difficult to invest even a lakh on Online Creatives.
Offline Agencies Vs The Online Agencies
As much as the marketers agree that Online is a high engagement medium for the consumers, they also need to realize that the job of Online Agencies is equally high involvement. It will be unfair when the fee’s paid to Online Agencies is benchmarked with the fee’s paid to the Offline agency. The scale and involvement are both not in favor of the Online Agencies to be compared to the offline agencies.
Yes you may find a few desperate-for-business agencies taking your mandate on unviable business terms, but be rest assured that the bigger loss is that of the advertiser because he will never receive his money’s worth with this approach. This approach unfortunately also leads to creating a wrong perception towards the effectiveness of the medium.
Localization Of Medium
Finally, there is serious dearth of local Internet inventory today. A lot more needs to be done whether in terms of local/regional content, vernacular advertising, more targeted IP & behavioral advertising. This will not only make Online advertising more targeted & relevant for the national players but shall make way for the yet to be tapped huge SME advertiser market. In a country where organized retail is less than 2%, the potential of the unorganized SME advertiser is too large to be ignored. Companies such as Google Ad Sense and TYROO are doing a great job in helping consolidate the local publishers and advertisers.
While these are all very real challenges being faced by the industry, I am sure they are not insurmountable. The Internet AD world will slowly but surely grab a much larger share of the advertiser’s pie in times to come.

Google Knol - Online Knowledge Sharing
A few months ago we announced that Google testing a new product called “Google Knol”. Knols are authoritative articles about specific topics, written by people who know about those subjects. Today, they making Knol available to everyone.
The web contains vast amounts of information, but not everything worth knowing is on the web. An enormous amount of information resides in people’s heads: millions of people know useful things and billions more could benefit from that knowledge. Knol will encourage these people to contribute their knowledge online and make it accessible to everyone.
The key principle behind Knol is authorship. Every knol will have an author (or group of authors) who put their name behind their content. It’s their knol, their voice, their opinion. We expect that there will be multiple knols on the same subject, and we think that is good.
With Knol, Google introducing a new method for authors to work together that call “moderated collaboration.” With this feature, any reader can make suggested edits to a knol which the author may then choose to accept, reject, or modify before these contributions become visible to the public. This allows authors to accept suggestions from everyone in the world while remaining in control of their content. After all, their name is associated with it!
Knols include strong community tools which allow for many modes of interaction between readers and authors. People can submit comments, rate, or write a review of a knol. At the discretion of the author, a knol may include ads from our AdSense program. If an author chooses to include ads, Google will provide the author with a revenue share from the proceeds of those ad placements.
Google happy to announce an agreement with the New Yorker magazine which allows any author to add one cartoon per knol from the New Yorker’s extensive cartoon repository. Cartoons are an effective (and fun) way to make your point, even on the most serious topics.
Everyone knows something. See what people are writing about, then tell the world what you know: knol.google.com
Google Toolbar PageRank Update Coming
Google Gives A Heads-Up: PageRank Update!
Matt Cutts , via his blog has taken the first ever initiative by Google to inform Webmasters of an upcoming update. This time, Matt has informed the Webmasters that Google would be updating the toolbar PageRank within a few days. This would lessen the confusion and the chaos that usually follows when an update is carried out by Google.
Also, with the revelation of these details, Matt has also announced, much to the joy of many Webmasters that, Google would be revoking some of the older penalties that had been levied on websites by Google.
According to Matt, I wanted to let you know that new toolbar PageRank values should become visible over the next few days. Im expecting that also in the next few days that well be expiring some older penalties on websites.
Finally, Google has done what Yahoo! has been doing for a long time with its Weather Update. Giving the Webmasters, a forewarning of a possible update. This would surely make a lot of Webmasters breathe a sigh of relief, knowing that the possible ups and down that their websites might witness, are the results of an update and not a glitch.
