PostHeaderIcon Free SEO Guide to Start your SEO Company or Business

his article is for those of you who are learning search engine optimization (SEO) or working in the field with a view to starting your own SEO business or on-selling your services as an SEO contractor or freelancer.

How to Do SEO Business Planning and Preparation

First up, you need to think about what type of SEO services you are going to provide and what type of goals you would like your business to achieve. You’ll need to prepare a business plan and answer questions such as the following:

• Will I require finance?
• What are my long and short term goals?
• How will I market my business?
• Who are my potential customers?
• Who are my competitors?
• What services will I offer?
• What should my business / trading name be?

Getting Started

Next, you need to decide how to set up your business structure. You’ll need to answer questions like:

• How will I structure my business? Will I be a sole trader? A partnership? A company?
• Will I need to hire staff?
• What taxes will I be liable for?
• Do I need to create a business bank account?
• What type of business stationery/marketing materials do I need?

Your Workplace

A key component of your new business is its location. Ask yourself questions such as:

• Do I need to rent commercial office space or serviced offices?
• Can I work from home?
• Can I claim home office expenses?
• Do I have a dedicated workspace?
• Can clients access my workplace easily?
• Do I need to purchase equipment or furniture?
• Should I buy a desktop or laptop computer?
• Do I have adequate room for extra staff?
• Can I set and stick to reasonable working hours?

Tools of the Trade

In the SEO business, there are quite a few “must have” tools of the trade that you will find indispensable. Some of these are huge time-savers and others are vital if you run an online business. These include:

Hardware

• At least one desktop computer with plenty of memory and hard drive capacity
• Broadband, ISDN or Wireless Internet connection
• Separate phone/fax lines
• A cell phone and/or palmtop
• A reliable fax machine or PC fax software*
• An answering machine*
• A printer / scanner / copier*
• A file cabinet / desktop filing system
• A large desk with drawers
• A comfortable, ergonomic office chair

* There are a large number of product manufacturers that offer a combination of all these elements in the one machine.

Software / Tools

There’s plenty of tools and software available to help the busy SEO / SEM operator. Here are some of my favorites:

• Freshbooks Invoicing and Timesheets
• Keyword Discovery
• Proposal Kit Proposal Creation Software
• ClickTracks Log File Analysis Software

Open for Business!

When you’re ready to start business, you need to spread the word about your business and start dealing with clients. You’ll need to address things like:

• What domain name should I buy?
• Can I design my own web site?
• How will I market my business online?
• How will I promote my business offline?
• What are my short and long term marketing goals?
• What clients do I want to attract?
• How will I invoice clients?
• How do I want clients to contact me?
• What type of client contract do I need?

Getting Clients

Finding clients can be difficult for new business start-ups. You haven’t yet developed a reputation and you have no clients to vouch for the quality of your services. Here are a couple of suggestions for attracting new clients:

• Ask friends and family if they need or know of anyone seeking SEO services.
• Approach your favorite charities and offer to do some pro-bono work in return for publicity and use of their case studies.
• Join SEO industry organizations like the SEO Consultants Directory.
• Spread the word you are open for business.
• Hang out at SEO forums and chat rooms offering free advice.
• Commence a PPC campaign targeting persons seeking SEO services.
• Optimize your own site so you rank high for SEO related searches!

Other Considerations

• Having a watertight contract
• Having a professional services proposal (e.g. Proposal Kit)
• Business and indemnity insurance

Keeping Clients

Once you have your clients, keep them happy. Try to address these issues:

• How can I provide the best customer service?
• How can I solicit client feedback on my services?
• Should I offer a satisfaction guarantee?
• Is my contract client-friendly?
• How can I reward my best clients?
• What can I on-sell to my clients? (Would you like fries with that?)
• Do I want to give my clients corporate gifts?
• How should I regularly keep in touch with clients?

Working in the SEO Industry

The SEO industry is a strange beast. It’s growing enormously fast, due to the boom in search and so the demand for search engine optimization services is huge. However it is also plagued with a bad reputation, thanks to a handful of fast-talking, money-grabbing companies claiming to be SEO experts and taking advantage of web site owners with little knowledge of how search engines work.

For this reason, if you choose to work in the SEO industry, you may come across some skepticism and doubt from clients who have been burned by shoddy operators in the past. You’ll need to work extra hard at overcoming client fears and proving the value of your services.

But as long as you truly know what you are doing, can prove the ROI on your services, educate your clients about the SEO process, use ethical business practices and follow the guidelines set down by the search engines, you should build up a good reputation quickly.

Here are some resources that will help you in this direction:

• Search Marketing Benchmark Guide 2008
• Writing Useful Articles That Readers Will Love (Finding Your SEO Niche)

Getting Help

Even if you’re a seasoned pro at search engine optimization, there’s always something more to learn. Occasionally, there will be times when something has you completely baffled or you don’t quite know how to handle a particular client situation. That’s when you need a little advice or guidance from your peers.

The following forums are popular hang-outs for persons in the SEO industry. Whether you’re a novice or veteran, you’ll always learn something new, make new friends and possibly even get new clients by visiting regularly and contributing your time to the webmaster community:

• Cre8asite Forums
• SEO-News Forum
• High Rankings Search Engine Optimization Forum
• SearchEngineWatch Forums
• Webmaster World
• Search Engine Forums
• SitePoint Forums

Growing Your Business

After you’ve been in business for a while, there comes a time when you’ll need to decide whether to expand and take on more and more clients or to cap your growth capacity and turn down new projects. Here are some things to consider when that time comes:

• Do I want to expand my business?
• Do I really need more clients?
• Can I hire more staff?
• Should I take on an admin person or virtual assistant?
• Should I take on temporary or contract staff?
• Can I outsource some aspects to specialists?

Pitfalls to Avoid

Here are a few common pitfalls to avoid when running your own business:

• Don’t fail to create a business plan and update it regularly. Small businesses don’t plan to fail, they fail to plan.
• Don’t let bad creditors get away with it – always chase overdue invoices before they cause a cash-flow problem and make sure your Terms of Trade are clearly available on your site, on your invoice and in your proposals.
• Don’t get caught up on administrative tasks. Delegate them where possible so you can concentrate on your clients and your business.
• Don’t forget to communicate with your staff regularly. Make use of collaboration software to manage your client projects effectively.
• Don’t take on more clients than you can handle.
• Don’t discount your services if you can help it – recognize the value of your knowledge, time and services.
• Don’t lose sight of your goals – spend at least one day per week on marketing and business development.
• Don’t spread yourself too thin. It’s better to let someone else handle a client than do a poor job of it yourself.
• Don’t become a workaholic, make sure you work reasonable hours and take regular vacations with your family.
• Don’t burn-out. Keep asking: Am I enjoying myself? Remember to have fun!!

PostHeaderIcon Effective way of Facebook and Twitter Optimization

s Free SEO Tips go, one of the best tips you can get surrounds the idea of using social media opportunities to improve your search engine rankings. While it may seem strange that you should used social media sources outside your website to improve the rankings of your existing website, the fact remains that white hat SEO involves making social media connections and managing social media efforts carefully.

Here are a few white hat SEO tips that you can use when using social media options to get your existing website search engine optimized. When you decide to begin a campaign for social media you can meet likeminded webmasters or website owners that have content similar to yours; this gives you a chance to get in on some great reciprocal linking opportunities and to work toward ranking # 1 in Google.

As you get links to point to your web site and you return the favor, your search engine rankings increase, helping you to get to #1 on Google. You can also use your social media pages such as FaceBook Fan Pages, Twitter and Linked in to link to your pages too, again creating links that point back to your website.

As an SEO technique, establishing good social media marketing with relevant content on the web will also allow you to build up your credentials as an expert in your industry or field; when this happens, more people will be driven to your website and to read what you have to say based upon your perceived credibility. Social media opportunities like Twitter will also give you a great method for reaching a target audience, and you can use the pages to create targeted articles and content that will appeal to a broader audience; this content can, again, be used to drive traffic to the website you have established. That being the case, you will need to make sure that you are constantly adding fresh and intriguing content to your social media pages, and you will also want to be sure to have in place a mechanism(contact form) to keep in touch with all of the contacts that you make.

Targetseo.com SEO Company India and Internet Marketing Company in india provides Social media marketing services like Social Book Marking, Facebook Optimization, Twitter Optimization, Linkedin Marketing and Traffic Building from various Social Community websites.

PostHeaderIcon Sachin Tendulkar - Most Search Cricketer in Google Search 2010

Google India announced its second IPL Zeitgeist for 2010 - an insight into the most searched teams and players during the third season of the Indian Premier League. Sachin Tendulkar emerged as the most searched Indian cricketer, followed by Sourav Ganguly. Shane Warne continued to be the most searched international player at the IPL, for the second year running.

Conspicuous by their absence were popular names such as M.S. Dhoni, Virender Sehwag and ‘the Fake IPL Player’, who moved off the top 10 this year. Adam Gilchrist, Ryan Harris and Praveen Kumar made their debut on the list at number 7, 8 and 9 respectively. Among the teams, Deccan Chargers ousted the Mumbai Indians from the top slot, who emerged as a close second. Chennai Super Kings rounded up the top 3 teams, as Kolkata Knight Riders dropped to number four this year.

‘Super Over’ emerged as the most searched IPL related query on YouTube followed by Chennai Super Kings. Yusuf Pathan, who did not make it to the IPL Zeitgeist on Google Search, emerged as the most searched player on YouTube.

To compile the 2010 IPL Zeitgeist, Google studied the aggregation of queries pertaining to IPL that people typed into Google search during the IPL season 3. It used data from multiple sources, including Insights for Search, Google Trends and internal data tools. It also filtered out spam and repeat queries to arrive to a list which captured the essence of the series. Google said that the entire search queries studied was anonymous - no personal information was used.

Ahmedabad in Gujarat is fast becoming a major IT hub in India, said industry experts here Friday. Their comments came in the wake of union Science and Technology Minister Kapil Sibal’s comment Monday that Gujarat was lacking in the IT sector.

IT players in the state hotly contested Sibal’s views. They said although Gujarat was a late starter, it had taken several steps to catch up with the leaders and will soon be counted as the major IT hub of India.

Paavan Solanki, renowned search engine consultant and founder of seo firm http://www.targetseo.com , said  SEO industry was surging ahead in the state thanks to strong government support. ‘Players who have located their operations in Ahmedabad Gujarat are happy with the way things were moving. In the next six to eight months, people will experience the force of IT industry in the state,’ said Solanki.

The IT head Third Generation Resource,  http://www.development-india.com Mr. Ruchit Patel,   said that there was now keen awareness in Gujarat that IT was the backbone of all operations. ‘There is a strong movement in the state to have the IT backbone,’ Patel said.

Dr. Shailesh Thaker, CLO of knowledge inc http://www.drshaileshthaker.co.in  and management thinker, said IT had a strong presence in Gujarat.

‘There are chip design companies, leading BPOs as well as KPOs. Globally branded firms have their presence in Gujarat. Nasscom (National Association of Software and Services Companies) has ranked Ahmedabad to be among the top five Indian destinations for business process and knowledge process outsourcing,’ thaker stressed.

Industry players in the state pointed out the fact that the IT Summit held in December 2006 was extremely successful.

Nineteen companies signed memoranda of understanding (MoUs) for investments totalling Rs.110.67 billion at the summit.Of the 19 companies, nine were IT park developers, one telecom service provider and nine software and ITeS companies.

Notable among them were Nipiam InfoTech with plans for an IT park in Vadodara with an investment of Rs.26 billion.

Fascel Ltd (Hutch) inked an intent to invest Rs.25 billion for setting up a 2,500-seat call centre, putting up a 4,500 km optical fibre network for lease line solutions and setting up retail points across the state for providing GSM and enterprise solutions. The other bigwigs included DLF Commercial, which will set up three IT parks - in Gandhinagar, Ahmedabad and Vadodara.

Aqualine Properties Ltd, part of the Raheja Corp, signed in for an investment of Rs.12 billion to set up an IT special economic zone in Gandhinagar.

PostHeaderIcon Twitter Users Survey 2009 2010 in India

Twitter has achieved tremendous growth in the last few months and a poll conducted by pluGGd.in (http://www.pluggd.in), India’s leading technology site reveals how Indians are using Twitter for.

Twitter has achieved tremendous growth in the last few months and a poll conducted by pluGGd.in (http://www.pluggd.in), India’s leading technology site revealed the ways Indians are using Twitter for.

While majority (17%) of users are still figuring out what do with Twitter, those who use it regularly are using Twitter as a news channel/service (16%).

Summary of Poll Results

The poll, conducted over a period of 3 weeks (across 1100+ members) has interesting statistics that reveals the general awareness about Twitter in India

  • 16% use Twitter to stay updated with news
  • 11% prefers to stay in touch with Friends using Twitter.
  • 11% enjoy updating their status (gives them Ego boost)
  • 10% use Twitter for Research
  • 17% are not at all sure of Twitter usage.
  • 14% of the members polled are not on Twitter
  • 12% of the usage happens on work related areas.
  • Only 10% use Twitter to meet interesting people

Is Twitter a threat to social networks?

Only 10% said they use Twitter to meet interesting people, but the network effect is surely a potential threat (11% use Twitter to stay connected to their friends).

Insights from the poll

The poll allowed people to choose 2 answers and here are some of the significant inferences:

  • 68% of those who wants to stay updated with news also chose ‘stay in touch with friends’ : essentially, these are heavy users of the system and are influential netizens.
  • Strong overlap (73%) between a fraction of netizens using Twitter for research purpose as well as work related.
  • 30% of netizens have no clue about Twitter – they haven’t registered or if they have, they are still figuring out how to use Twitter.
  • Twitter for social networking? Only 10% said they use Twitter to meet interesting people – so in all reality of the hype, Twitter isn’t a threat (in the near future) to social networks.

“Twitter popularity in India is primarily driven by the buzz created by media and it’s interesting to note that majority of Twitter usage is work related/research purpose giving the tool a wider meaning than microblogging. Moreover, Twitter is still being experimented for different reasons (global phenomena) and expect more use cases when it reaches the common mass, via sms integration” – said Ashish Sinha, Chief Editor of pluGGd.in.

PostHeaderIcon IT Companies capital stuck in PayPal Payment Issue

Dollar payments by thousands of small and medium Indian businesses have been stuck over the last three weeks, after US online payments company PayPal suspended payment transaction to and from India over regulatory issues. PayPal’s move followed questions from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) about whether the US firm complies with laws on cross-border money transfers. Over 7,000 complaints, from customers who are unable to trace their money, have flooded internet portals and blogs.
On January 28 this year, the RBI clamped down on PayPal for carrying out interbank money transfers without a requisite licence. PayPal, which manages over 190 million accounts in 194 countries, responded by suspending monetary transfers to and from India, a move that has affected 30,000-40,000 businesses and individuals. Even as the outage is likely to continue in March, PayPal India officials were inaccessible for comment. Neither Farhad Irani, PayPal’s Asia Pacific head, responded to an e-mailed questionnaire nor eBay India’s spokesperson.

Meanwhile, small businesses are bearing the brunt of the impasse. Mahendra Sharma, chief executive of IT companies in India, a Web solutions company, had requested withdrawal of $6,500 made to a US client via his PayPal account. “I assume it is nowhere in the system, because till date, I am unable to trace it; it is neither in my PayPal account nor in my bank. PayPal simply apologises for the inconvenience and says that it is ‘working on it’, but has no clear explanation to offer,” Sharma fumed. PayPal users were first told on February 3 that the portal was in the process of upgrading its systems.

Krithika, a director with Chennai-based website design firm Anis Info Web, is yet to trace her $2,000, transacted to a US client on February 1. “They promised to reverse the money to my bank account which they didn’t. It’s not there in the PayPal account either. There is no clear time window on when I will get to know the fate of my money.”

PayPal has become the standard mode for making payments and withdrawals to many Indian SMBs and freelance programmers, bypassing the high processing fees of conventional banking channels. Companies noted that banks typically charge between $40-$50 as transfer fees per $1,000 transacted. Making a snappy money transfer via credit card on PayPal was viewed as a cheaper and better option.

According to users of PayPal, while the portal does not have investment bank status, it has been performing the functions of an investment bank. “If they did not have the RBI approval for conducting bank-to-bank transfers, why did they start money transfer operations? In the event of them going ahead with processing business transactions and charging fees for the same, RBI should have stopped them early on. Too many transactions are blocked, with absolutely no clarity on payment and withdrawal status,” said the CEO of a trading company, who finds himself unable to access the $15,000 which he sent via PayPal earlier this month.

Defining himself as a “creditor” in a purely legal sense, the CEO said that PayPal users are likely to form pressure groups to press their case with the RBI. “We are unable to understand PayPal’s reticence and lack of transparency with customers.”

Saurabh Bhandari, CEO of Indore-based Flair Solutions, said, “My money with them is untraceable at present, and my complaints are still unresolved. Practically anybody in India who does business with small clients in the US have been using PayPal because they trust them. But this trust is disappearing.”

“We are working on a consensus among affected users and exploring legal options, if the status of the money remains unclarified by PayPal,” added Sharma, who has written to the RBI’s Mumbai branch for a clarification on the issue.
